My dad used to when my sisters and I were younger. It sometimes would kill our grass though. Now i live on a lake and make a rink on the lake. I drill two holes in the ice and drop subpumps in the water and pump lake water up on the ice, Makes it nice and smooth. just make sure to make a border out of something (snow, 2x4's)

My neighbour makes one in his backyard every year. It lookes pretty sweet. I never use it though, i just go onto the river behind my house and clear it off for a rink. Its easier to flood and to maintain too. Sometimes it even just turns into a giant ice sheet so you can skate for killometers and killometers... its pimp. I love my river.

One of my hockey buddies from back in the day had one in his back yard, and it was awesome... couldn't really do much cause it was so damn bumpy (and we were too lazy to maintain it) but it was fun to hack around on.
