You dun messed up. But yes OP this has been brought up probably a hundred times. People seem to think that we don't need an app. Personally I think an app would be 1,000% better!!!! Get notifications when someone quotes one of your posts or comments on your pictures or videos.. that would be so nice

Ns had been redesigned many times over the years. I'd be kinda surprised if they havnt been laying the base work to have an app set up. Look at TGR, they have a mobile app and have for years. Granted it's pretty basic, but it works well for its intended purpose. I'd pay a buck for it on Android.

that would also mean either starting from scratch with no members, or taking the site offline for months (maybe even a year, depending on how many people they can afford to pay to work on it) to rebuild it
I think there's a lot more to it than we realize, and the cost to rebuild the site AND design a site is definitely more than we think
bishop and the admin team aren't dumb, they know eventually they'll have to make an app, it's just not feasible right now (from what I've read at least, if you check site discussion forums there's tons of threads about this)

Is that actually how it works? Think of when you get the Facebook app for the first time. You don't have to create a new account but simply sign into your regular one. Couldn't they work it like that?

no what I'm saying is that the site, as is, is not designed to work as an app. So, they'd have to start fresh on a new site with a newer database type, void of any members / information and leave this site up as it is until they finish the new one. Or they close this site down and update / rebuild it using the current database where all of the information is stored (I don't know how the site was built originally so I have no idea if that's even possible given its framework).
Now I could be wrong here, and if I am I'd love to be enlightened. But I think the whole process would be really tough
I could code a forum app for newschoolers that would support mobile, tablet, desktop and native platforms such as iOS and Android in an afternoon with Meteor.js. It's not that hard.
I think the last time this was proposed, I said I could totally put hours in to make one, but i'm pretty sure the problem has to do with their database/request set up. I would be totally down to do all of the work if they had a MySQL DB set up.

MySQL is just like an industry standard database client. It's completely free, you just have to set it up. If they made a clone of their DB and moved it to MySQL, they wouldn't even have to worry about changing the website at all, and I could connect to it using PHP scripts built solely for the app.
TL;DR If they make a copy of the database with MySQL, I will make a newschoolers app for free
really doubt it's that easy, I'm sure they would have done that by now. I think the issue is more that the database NS runs off of can't just be "moved" to MySQL
And I found the post where Bishop addresses the issues with moving NS to a mobile app:
THe one time we tried an app it was with a 3rd party developer that just did an HTML scrape of the page. Every single time we launched an update he had to put in an enormous amount of work just to make it work.
The site was never built with a public API in the back-end because frankly nobody did that shit in the early 2000s when most of the infrastructure was built.
We've had it on 'the list' for years to actually rip out the guts and re-build it with modern web infrastructure in mind, but its an enormous task that we haven't yet managed to get the time/funding to do.
The other option is to kind of re-build the site one chunk at a time, which is what we've been doing for the last few years. This works great, but has a lot of limitations compared to starting fresh, and things tend to take a lot longer than they should.
Believe me, as an avid iPhone user I understand the absolute god damn atrocity that is the mobile experience on NS. We've done our best to provide something that will hold people over until we can address properly, and doing so is very high up the priority list. Its going to be pandoras box though once we let the app floodgates open, so we need to make sure we do it right and address all the future demands of the codebase that will come with going there.
If we could raise like $200k through kickstarter we could easily re-build the site in 6-12 months with a team of fucking animals. :)

You are right, it is much more complicated than this, it most likely can't be moved like that. I'm saying that if they ever do move to MySQL, I will gladly help with the work that is involved with the app and even the backend of the app as well.

Sorry for the dub post, but I also just want to say that I understand NS is not a small website. I don't think that they have lack of talent to do this type of stuff, but as it has been said in many threads before it would take a lot of time. I know that bishop and the rest will get to it some time, I'm just being impatient lol

The ideas about notifications are on the list for the relatively near future, as seen in the other 1000000 threads about this.

Exactly, it is really difficult and resource intensive. NS needs to prioritise: They could work on improving the website for all users, or creating a new app which only a small minority would use, especially considering the mobile website works really well now.

This is actually the problem. It hasn't ever been completely remade, it has just been updated when certain areas were breaking down, so it would need to be completely overhauled to work with an app
