Skiing Needs a Thrasher

Yes, the controversial, rad, event-hosting, non-fuck giving magazine that skiing lacks. Sure Powder will always be core and better than Freeskier, but we need more. Look at skier of the year vs. skater of the year. People in skateboarding actually give massive fucks about SOTY. It's a huge honor to receive the award. Skier of the year is meh. Nobody really cares. Same goes for KOTR vs. Road Trip Challenge. One is insanely entertaining and rad while the other is Henrik Lampert talking the whole time. Someone has to step up to the plate.

Its also editorial acceptance. I mean Freeze didn't have enough readership to survive, because deep down inside skiers kind of secretly want to be lame.

I mean NS can easily be this exact place OP wants. Problem is we turned the voice over to the people, and it wasn't as edgy as we thought it would be.

But seriously - I mean why aren't more people stepping up and shaping the voice into this on Newschoolers? We could really easily do this.

That's honestly a great start and something I've been considering doing. But part THRASHER is that it's a platform for contests and events like KOTR.

http://www.lineofthewinter.com - that is a partnership between us and TW Snow. Its a start for contests.

We did the Newschoolers TAFT this year, which was a pretty cool demo tour. I'm working on other ideas, and there's no reason that we can't do that stuff. Just need some industry support, and some really killer ideas.

You should definitely start at the idea of an article series - or even just one. Ideas and new directions always have very humble beginnings, and right now on NS everything is driven by the community... so if you guys help be the change, we can help take it to that next level.

it's 2015. nobody needs Thrasher. skiing isn't skateboarding. Newschoolers produces multiples upon multiples of content that magazines do, for free, for everyone. i just don't see the benefit of a photo magazine when we have the internet.

The feeling of a magazine in hand will never be replaced by digital means, and yes I think skiing needs this sort of raw unfiltered view. Hoodcrew does a pretty good job at it so far. also, a non freeskier road trip challenge would be amazing and instead of solid teams, say if I showed up to the mountain where the two teams were throwing down, Im on nordicas, so I'd be on 'Team nordica' if i completed a challenge on film. let others in of the fun too and It will get so wild. Honestly just tryna see some craziness in the coming seasons.

on skier of the year, it will never be as good as skating because there are just too many different types of skiing and there will never be a perfect way to compare them equally. Skateboarding basically has one genre, while skiing has comp skiers, film skiers, park/backcountry. I mean, Joss won last year just by winning slope at the olympics. How is that fair to all the street skiers and backcountry dudes who put out gnar ass parts? idk maan

seriously though, we don't need a thrasher, we need a unique to skiing thing. Fuck copying off skating like we always have done, we are a big boy subculture now, we can make decisions on our own. IMO I like the idea that was said earlier to just show up at random mountains, make teams of riders based solely on what skis/boots/bindings they have, and make a set of challenges for the day or something. I mean that sounds fun as fuck, it would allow firsthand involvement to the demographic that would be supporting the very event, it would spread stoke to all the groms, the rad skiers, and basically everyone, and if its at say a place that has a done of crazy rad skiers, it could get pretty tricky.

IDK really, there is so much untapped potential for this stuff, and our community can probably get support for a good idea no problem. I Love this thread we need to have its continuity with ideas that arent full of shit.

put together a zine, just xerox it oldschool style. Make a thread, accept submissions, mail it out to those that are interested. Clearly there are enough people interested to make a few of these worthwhile. There is nothing like holding something homemade in your hands and I don't have to watch your shitty gopro edit.

Yeah we definitely could... but it would have to differentiate from what Freeskier does. It'd really have to be our own thing.

We do compensate people to do it. We just allow anyone to start a new direction instead of submitting their ideas to print where they are just ignored and thrown out. If you start an idea, it gets successful, then in no time you'll be getting paid.

I'm very conscious of this and we've been expanding our paid programs in huge amounts over the last 4-5 years we've been doing it.

Hah thanks. Honestly I expected to turn the whole voice over and it be one firehose of angry, rebellious revolutionaries. Instead I've found myself multiple times arguing that we don't need a clean-cut image to succeed. Hell I'm supposed to be the dad here, and way more than I anticipate I'm feeling like I'm arguing with a teenage son trying to convince him that law school is lame, he doesn't need to wear a suit and that you can succeed in an alternative path than what everyone else does. :)

Look at the big difference besides money. Accessibility. Skiing requires you to live near a mountain, access to a vehicle, $1000+ worth of stuff to get into it. Can only do it part of the year for the most part. Not to mention lift ticket costs

Skating is like the soccer of extreme sports. Cheap to get into, lot of money to be made, and can do it anywhere anytime.

Skiing can never be as "edgy" as skating because if a 13 year old kid wants to go skiing they need their parents to blow at least a grand on gear plus lift tickets not to mention how they need to be chauffeured to and from the ski hill. As much as skiers try and be thug on the hill they are still on average a clean cut preppy bunch.

In contrast a kid getting into skating can just pick up a beater board second hand off a neighborhood skater and just spend hours in public parks loitering and being a skid. the percentage of dirtbag skiers is way lower than dirtbag skaters and that's how it will always be. Almost 90% of skating is just loitering and breaking shit.

Skating is the sport of white trash american suburban kids and skiing is the sport of rich Europeans. No web content is going to change that.

Skiing is fucking gay.

This is actually an interesting concept. I think we over-shot the mark with the yearbook and how much it cost to produce/print. If we ever brought something like that back I almost think it would be better if it was ghetto as fuck to start.

Think about how snowboarding started- skiing was gay as shit and a bunch of rebel teens ignored the old yuppie mogul skiers and started doing their own thing. They were banned from a bunch of ski areas and were seen as punk kids. Snowboarding grew from rebellion where skiing is gold star certified by "the man". You need to watch Johnny Kapahala for a history lesson.

As a side note, even though i have been going on about how gay skiing is it don't mean i'm ever going to stop its still my favorite feeling in the world. I just don't agree with manufacturing fake culture. The skate and to a lesser extent snowboarding culture that you guys are talking about trying to replicate are organic to those specific sports. Why make skiing into skating when it is totally not the same thing. Will we all get laid? Skiing has its own thing going and its quickly taking back riders from snowboarding. If skiers needed and wanted a thrasher mag there would already be one.

What i want to see is equipment like the blanks that surface was (is?) making- something that is high enough quality but can be produced and sold somewhere in the neighborhood of like $150 if you want the "youth". i think that while content about being core is cool getting more people with skis on their feet just trying shit is the way to stay relevant. That and spraying slow signs.

I think i might have just said something retarded but that's just my $0.02

Anyways, its refreshing to have some stimulating discussion on here for once.

"newschool" or "freeskiing" will always be moderated by the more mainstream, ordinary disciplines of skiing in ways that make it seem lamer than snowboarding or skateboarding to certain people.....but distancing ourselves from the "less core" aspects of skiing is biting the hand that feeds us.

When JLev says "It's just skiing", the point is that ordinary skiers don't make us lame by extension. They're the white sheep, and our style of skiing makes us the black sheep.....so we gotta do our thing in their presence. If we leave to start our own "black sheep only" flock, it defeats the purpose.

I think Shane was great at that, presenting himself as being an individual and different from ordinary skiers without separating himself from them. Same with Candide's OOTD edits. Being different to most skiers is what defines us.

It is a great idea to take influences, as long as we're not simply claiming some other community's culture as our own because we're envious and insecure. Like rollerbladers did.....and everyone knows how that worked out.
