When I flew back I saved $300 on a flight back from sydney, it only cost me 180 to fly there so I got to fly to sydney for a week for almost free. Worth looking into if you have the time.

OP, where are you going? If you're north island at all I'd highly recommend the tongariro crossing. Pretty epic. I did it in a storm but still had a great time. Can be a good amount of snow up there depending on when you go.

If I go back I'm going to do the hobbit thing. Wasn't that worried about it when I was there before but would be kind of cool. That's somewhere near hamilton I believe.

Obviously go bungee jumping and or skidiving because yolo and stuff.

I didn't get to do anything south island as I decided to come back to the states early to see phish so that's on the agenda for me.

The lady that owns the place I was living said I can come back and visit rent free for a few weeks. I think she just wants to give me an excuse to come back and that's a good one.

The bridge to nowhere and some other stuff looked cool but never made it. Heard real good things about the beaches but also never made it.

snow park is closed for good i'm pretty sure. Cardrona is really good, never been there though. If you're in the North Island come up to Turoa for a bit even though it doesn't get that good til late july/august

Hell yeah. Luckily it's not a huge country like the US so you can really get a feel for the country in a short amount of time without being rushed.

As somebody else mentioned snow park closed down a few years ago. Here are your ski options.

Cardrona seems to have the most consistent park. They also had their XL jumps open in June thanks to all the dirt work they did recently. The season up north doesn't really get going for a while but lasts till october/early november. I haven't skied the south island but in june/july that seems like the place to go.

It's about 12 miles. Honestly I feel like they ruined the path a little bit to make it more accessible but you still see some amazing views, it's a great hike, and it's not that tough imo. If it's been snowing you might encounter snow and ice mid way. I wanted to hike Mount Ngauruhoe but I was in a heavy cloud up there on ice and didn't feel like summitting a mountain in sketchy conditions without gear and then not even be able to see anything at the top.

Top of Ruapehu in the spring. The drop into the crater is AMAZING! One of my favorite lines I've done. No rocks where I went but nice consistently steep and ripable. Smiled so much that day it hurt. Hiked that in pretty sketchy conditions without an axe or crampons but it was worth it.

Also if you dig the LOTR movies it's not a bad idea to check out different sites for the filming locations. It's pretty cool to be in those epic landscapes and be like "this part of this movie was filmed here" etc.

Lot's of good dirtjumping and mountain bike trails there. Pump tracks, dh trails in the woods, fields full of bmx style dirt jumps. Great weather for it. It's like spring. You have your snow on the mountain but you're wearing a tshirt and shorts most of the time even in the middle of winter. The snow is there but it won't keep you from doing much unless you're trying to hike way up in the mountains.

I was only there for 4 months but it was one of the best experiences I've had and I felt like I saw so little. I hope I get to make it back there whether it's to work or just a short visit. If you manage to get in both islands and a little bit of anything it's going to be an awesome trip!

If you don't have a decent camera, buy one. The landscape is fucking epic.

North Island is touristy (compared to south). Auckland, Wellington are pretty baller. I did some seriously awesome mountain biking in Wellington. I would recommend Rotorua they also have incredible mountain biking and zorbs. If you are into scuba diving some of the best in the world is off the coast up north. I really enjoyed Napier and New Plymouth.

I lived in New Zealand for 7 months and had a chance to spend two of those months living in a hostel / skiing and doing a 5000km-ish road trip from top to bottom. I have seen most of NZ and it's incredible. There is so much to do. I don't want to write an essay but if you want more specifics I can always help.

There is a ferry that connects the South island to the North (Nelson -> Wellington) which you can bring your car on. Not too expensive and travel time isn't too bad.

I remember it being pretty expensive. My roomates did it Ended up just bussing it to the south island to save a bunch of loot.

Depends on your budget. If I'm going to be traveling for a month, I'll shell out the extra cash so I don't have to sit on a bus with a bunch of asians for the next month or deal with hitch hiking.

I had a car for half the time and the other half nada. NZ is a very friendly hitch hiking place but sometimes the towns are just super small on the south island (population 50) and it can become a waiting game and just praying you get picked up. I was smoked out on one ride, told I was going to be killed another, people tried to get me to convert religions, ect. It's really a mixed bag.

Overall, if you have the dinero a car makes it worth it. Just make sure you go around the "round a bouts" in the right direction when driving hahaha.


Also beer is really expensive, I hope you like wine or RTDs (ready-to-drink). I can't remember exactly but a pack of shitty beer over there is about twice as expensive as in the states.
