so me and my bud .lencon were going for max speed today, and we got this result. we got first chair on the canyon and got some niceeee groomers. so we decided to go full throttle. we started the app on the last part of riding the lift. we get off the lift, traverse over to the canyon, and then send it. so heres the results..
we were absolutely mobbing. this was the fastest ive ever gone and was scared for my life. .lencon was on his 4frnt yle and i was on my KF rayzrblaydz. so theres this canyon at pebble and we straight lined it to the bottom. did we really go this fast? how accurate is ski tracks app? anybody have any experiences with the app?
I seriously doubt you did 96 miles an hour (150km/h) but it's possible. The fastest man on skis did 157mph (250km/h). Those ski tracker apps use your GPS to find speed which isn't the most reliable way of doing it, but you were probably in the vicinity of 96mph
While I have no doubt you were mobbing, at high speeds this app is super unreliable. It works with gps, and if the connection is lost for a moment, your "dot" on the map will freeze. As soon as the connection is regained, the dot indicating location will quickly slide to your actual location. The dot will be moving much faster than you were, because it has to catch up to you.

The fastest recorded speed in a dh race is 96.6 mph. Guys usually hit around 130km/h which is only 80mph. I very much doubt that a random ns dude bombing down his local hill is hitting 150km/h.

You realize we just went straight down like 300 yards worth of 42 degree slope, then went to the main canyon. We didn't lank any turns unless we had to turn with the canyon.

yea i figured it was inaccurate, but johan clarey? he was over 100mph. like i said its probly inaccurate but there were no turns at all made in our run . lol let the hate roll in
I would imagine you went somewhere around 85-90mph. I tested this app on the interstate last year because it clocked me and my buddy at 86.7mph and we wanted to see if it was true. The app was consistently about 3-5mph off every reading, so it does work pretty well.

Yeah. My bad. I saw 96.6 after a 2 minute google search. I saw the 101 or whatever it was after a slightly longer search.
I'm definitely not saying you guys didn't go crazy fast, I'm just skeptical it was that fast. I could be completely wrong though.

thank goodness somebody that can verify!!! k+++ to you my good sir for actually testing it on the road

These apps only work if you have a constant GPS signal, which you likely did on the interstate. In the mountains signal can get tenuous so the readings would be out by a larger margin, but they were probably pretty close (within 10mph) of the reading

The only thing I'd still be slightly wary of with regards to this is GPS connection. While I'm assuming you guys probably had a pretty clear connection on an interstate and you were definitely going that fast, it does get a little spotty in less developed places like some resorts, which would lead me to think it's reading the speed from trying to catch up as was suggested up higher.

Pebble creek is like 10 min from the interstate and on the closest mountain to the interstate if that has a factor.
All the kids that do lessons here in Whist have this little GPS tracker they strap to their legs when they're up on the hill. Apparently their speed tracking is super accurate.
If you mountain has them as well, hit up an instructor or something and see if you can get hold of some. They'll give you a pretty good indication of how accurate the app is/how fast you actually went.
That's fast as fuck but totally possible. Racers never really get a chance to hit top speed. My buddy and I hit 130km/h which is like 80mph and it's definitely possible to go faster than that. I've also had 110 and shit many many times so I don't think it's inaccurate

exactly my thoughts man, racers have to turn and hit the gates and stuff. k+
why is your battery level so high after having your phone in your pocket all day? you must have charged it on the way home or when you got home, and the 96 mph was in your car on the way home

Looking back at the picture, he only ran the app for 6 minutes. So either the driver is FUCKING INSANE uphills or the app glitched.

That was my first run of the day so we I turned it on with like 1 minute on the lift left then we headed over and bombed. I can guarantee you it wasn't on the highway, it might have been inaccurate, but this was on the ski hill. Also if you look at the stats you can see stuff like 42 degrees, elevation, all of that. Show me a road with those kind of stats to make your argument valid in the first place. My battery level is so high cause i had it fully charged. Got first chair, turned it on then turned it off when i got on the lift.
The fastest I have skied in the Midwest is 64 at Granite Peak. Went wayyy faster at Steamboat once. Straight-lined under the gondola. Must have been around 80mph.

^ make sure you actually read the post before commenting lol. i clearly state how we turned the app on while we were still on the lift, and then turned it off once we got done to save battery and data usage(hence the high battery percent) . and the app says "1 run" lol

Also, who the heck drives home at 9:40 in the morning? If your gonna look at the pic, look at all of it.
This app is really inaccurate. I tested it last christmas, next to a proper speed trap. While we were constantly hitting around 100km/h through the speed trap, the app said we were going anywhere from 70-130.
After reading this thread, I believe you went fast as F and that it could be accurate. Though you should calibrate the app on the highway close by to confirm. (and I'll note my car speedometer is off ~4mph at 70mph, it reads faster than I'm going, so make sure you know how accurate your vehicle is...)
The highest speed recorded in downhill racing is 100 mph, set by Johan Clarey in 2013. The minimum lenght of those skis is 218mm, and they're stiff as fuck. The racers wear skin-tight suits to mimimize drag. I've volunteered at the World Cup races in Norway for the last couple years, and i've helped the course crew ice the course. They spray water to make the course as fast as possible.
I'm telling you there is no way you hit that speed. It feels a lot faster going 50-60mph on skis that going 70-80mph in a car. 60mph on skis is still pretty fast though. But that app is crazy inaccurate.

I'm not saying it's accurate, we made this thread to see. But we DID NOT TURN. We went straight down all the groomers.

You probably went pretty fast. But i doubt you were even close to 96mph. Just compare the conditions to a world cup downhill race. The snow, your clothes, your skis, everything.
You asked if the app is accurate or not, i'm telling you from experience it isn't. Do you honestly think you went faster than most world cup racers?

well, i would take my KF rayzrs over some race ski in a race any day lol

I'm not sure honestly. Racers that turn can hit up to 80 mph. World record of someone bombing is 157 mph. We did 96 bombing. So we're still 60 mph behind if it's accurate, so yeah I kinda think we could have. I'll test it in my car someday.
I've experienced that right around 60mph you hit a sort of terminal velocity. It doesn't matter how steep or how low I sit down, I've only hit 62.5 and that was on a really steep run. You need more aerodynamic outerwear to go much faster than 70.

This isn't going anywhere. You obviously made this thread to claim having gone 96mph on skis, which i find really hard to believe. I just answered your question.

Ive hit 65 straight bombing a 30 degree un-groomed slope on my bacons, I wouldn't doubt that on a 42 degree groomed run they went much faster
Look there's one way to see how accurate this app is, and to see if you really went around 96.6 mph. The app can definitely measure distance accurately through gps - so try to take the same run again (I get that part might be hard) and time yourself from the start of the run to the end. Use the time and distance you get to solve for your average miles per hour ( time/distanceinMiles = 1hour/x). This will probably be lower than the top speed you hit but will give you an idea if 96.6 mph was possible in your run. Hope this helps.
I do a decent amount of GPS work for school (with the cheap GPS receivers that are found in phones), and they are very accurate in determining velocity when height is unchanging. This is because they compute speed based the rate of lat, lon, alt change. GPS works by having multiple satellites (minimum of 3, optimum of 4 satellites) broadcast at the time over and over again. Since the satellites are at different distances away and the signal takes a constant time to travel, your reciever can triangulate your location based on small time differences between each signal. With a 3 satellite gps triangulation, lat and lon are very accurate but altitude can have large uncertainty. I would guess that the mtns blocked some signal and only gave your receiver 3 signals to work with. With 3 signals, there could be a big swing in the Z location and your total distance traveled could be huge error in altitude. Looking at the graph, your most rapid descent was 900ft(.17mi) in about .1 miles. This would compute to a slope of about 60 degrees ( tan-1(.17/.1). I don't know of any in bounds 60deg slopes or any 60deg slope I wouldn't shit myself skiing let alone straight lining, so I think your gps altitude is off and that error is propagating to an insanely high speed.
I'm not saying you weren't sending it, but 90+ seems excessively high. Just my theory though.
Sometimes strava says I'm doing like 500 MPh because I think it loses signal or something and then picks it up inaccurately and the calculation gets fucked up.

I completely agree. I hit a wall right aroung 65 and I can't possibly go any faster.
