Is childhood obesity a form of abuse?

Is allowing a child to become fat because of the shitty lifestyle the parents provide a form of child abuse?

Im torn on this. The act of allowing your child to become fat is not malicious. It is however neglectful. Neglect at a certain level is abuse, is it not?

if neglecting to feed a child until the child becomes ill is child abuse and punishable by law, why is it not the same for making them fat and ill?

Is it because they wont die from being fat right away like they will from malnourishment?

freestyler540No, obesity is not neglect. We barely understand the problem in the first place. Obesity is really hard to gauge and define. Also, obesity is not an immediate health problem in children. As long as they have a productive life and a proper development, who are we to judge their lifestyle? Abuse is when the child is in immediate danger for its present safety and development. Also, children are often checked by a pediatrician periodically to track the child's heath. A physician can find traces of abuse.

The new guidelines on obesity dropped the waistline measurement and opted for checking vitals.
Just because you are fat, does not mean your life is in danger. As long as the heart beats and the organs are doing their job, they are as productive as anyone else.


Obesity can and does cause chronic diseases in children.

But hes saying chronic illnesses do not meet the definition of abuse because there is no immediate danger.

What about certain types of verbal and psychological abuse? Im sure some psychological abuse does not really impact a childs life immediately but rather later on in life.

And being fat is most certainly dangerous. Just because they arent gonna die right now doesnt mean there isnt serious damage being done to a childs body.

How dare the government won't let my kids start smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol even thought I want them to. and I should be able to hit my kids if I want, and I don't want my kids to be educated so I don't want them going to school homeschooling or otherwise. I also want my kid to be fat as fuck, and suffer from Asthma, Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, High cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. That's my choice if I want my kids to be unhealthy, they should because I know better than everyone else.

the chances that somebody is fat from an actual health condition like a bad thyroid or a medical reason for a slow metabolism is slim.

It is slim, but does happen. A girl in my highschool was like 300+ lbs in senior year. Doctors finally decided to check her thyroid; hypothyroidism to the max. She lost 100 in two years after she started getting treatment for it.

Not really trying to prove a point, just think its interesting when it does happen though.

I feels ya. Yeah for sure it is possible. I've just seen way too many people try to use this as an excuse without seeing a doctor. I thought at one time I just had a slow metabolism and realized nope, I am lazy af. A lot has changed since that realization a few years ago.

I couldn't agree more. One thing I absolutely hate is this new HAES (Health at Every Size) movement. No if you are 300 lbs you are not healthy not matter what you are saying. Obese people have confirmed higher risks of heart disease among other complications. Although the BMI is not a perfect scale, look at the BMI results from this scientific paper: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22253363. North America (especially USA) is getting fat and people are trying to push this bullshit HAES movement.
