CameraWizSo I'm trying to get better audio in my shots. Is there an easier way to do it? Any tips or any help someone could provide? Not many tutorials on it.
EDolloStone1st off, "CameraWiz"? really? The CameraWiz is asking for basic camera help??
steezyjibberDo you have the in-camera microphone turned down?
CameraWizYes that's set to one notch from off.
Bogezif you are just making ski vids- just spend some time making a library of sounds and then use those.
It shouldn't take that long to make a pretty extensive library of ski noises.
DorianFThere a re a few ways you can do this with existing equipment
What I did was download an app called rode rec for my phone, then plugged the mic into my phone and tripodded the whole setup by a rail.
I then film a follow run, and when I get bak to the tripod I move it to a new rail so I have a decent library of sounds from most of the features
I match it up in post after. As I cut the clips I stick in the new audio and re render them so that when I do decide to edit them I don't have to mess with each clip, they are all good to go
If you want quality audio with no wind noise and you don't want to buy more gear then it's gonna take you some time. You said you don't want to take the time, well then your not gonna get the result you want. It's like anything else you get out of it what you put into it.
DorianFi dont know if this is the "right" way to do it, but this is the way i have been doing it. i also use vegas, and if i cut my clips at the end of the day it really doesnt take as long as you think. you just gotta keep up on it.
I dont really create an all encompassing library so much as just one for that particular day. most hills have rails that are made form the same materials. typically the same materials sound the exact same (at least when i play the sounds i cant tell the difference) and neither can your audience. to better explain this all turbo tubes at a hill will be made fromm the same materials and will typically sound the same when slid. you dont need to record sound for every turbo tube, just one (typically the longest - easier to cut audio shorter than to extend it)
you dont have to get audio from every single feature in the park (although if you can it is definitely better)just a piece of audio from a similar feature.
you can extend it a bit or slow it down to fit (not by a lot, but a little bit isnt really noticed +/- 10-15%)obviously switch ups need to go in the right places etc and the slap at the end doesnt even need to be from the rail. i found that recording at the landing of a jump produced a better slap/landing and i will often use that instead of the rail landing
i can give you a sample edit where i did this if you want to see it.

GuuseDo you do this with a Rode Videomic, or the iXY mic?
pussyfooterShotgun mic, deadcat and a little bit of post adjustment goes a very long way.
CameraWizI've got the Rode VMP with a windscreen but what do you do in post? That's more or less where I'm lost.
CameraWizI'm shooting on the +20db setting since I was told to
pussyfooterBasically cut any more wind noise you might have, using an EQ filter to bring down the gain of the low (50-200) frequencies.
Mkvackaywell thats your problem haha
CameraWizI was just told to do this so I can use as little as the camera amp as possible. Haven't really played around with it.
pussyfooterYeah dude I shoot 0db with a rode videomic pro and my internal setting on 1, I use a gh3.
CameraWizJust did that. I'll just boost sound in post.
pussyfooterahhh still not ideal. You don't wanna have to boost your audio more than 10db in post, you'll start to get a terrible hiss.
CameraWizWhat if I boost it then use a noise remover to remove the hiss? Audacity isn't that bad at it. One of these days I'll need to test that.
pussyfooterI mean, might as well just do it right from the start, don't you think?
Huck-e-Cheesethat lav idea is brilliant, like micing their ski. Im definitely going to try this next week haha

GuuseSo with a T3i, do you recommend turning down the internal volume, and then up on the Rode Videomic?
