U of Utah VS Montana State. Help me make a decision.

Off to college next year at one of these schools but I still can't decide which one. Im looking to study Engineering or Geology. I know a lot about both schools but any experiences you've had there, good or bad would be very helpful. Give me some pros and cons of each one. I have skied at a lot of resorts near both schools and would have to say Utah beats Montana in the skiing department. I am from Minnesota so I ski mostly park but if I started skiing all mountain and backcounty Montana skiing wouldn't be too bad. I like all outdoor stuff too, hiking, camping, rock climbing,etc.. So besides skiing what are the actual schools like. Academics? Difficulty? Party Scene? Girls? Vibes? People? Outdoor stuff? weather? city vs town? etc. Anything Helps +k for good answers. Thanks!

Park skiing in utah is obiously better than montana, but that shouldn't really be your main focus for school.

That being said, utah may have the better programs but I'm not entirely sure.

I'd say you'd get good skiing at both, so look into which schools have the programs that best fit your needs

utah, the land of waterd down beer and dry campus colleges, that being said, i would take a guess that utah may have some pretty decent engineering courses but MSU may have an upper hand in natural sciences.


(CU boulder would be your best bet for a engineering school)

Like 90% of colleges are dry. the beer is also the same alcohol as any light beer and the liquor store carries a large selection microbrews higher than 4%. Can we please shut up about this shit?

for geo I'd say MSU, but that's because we have a strong physical/natural sciences department!

If you care more about school I'd go to CU Boulder as they have a fantastic geology department and a good engineering school, but utah might be better for skiing.

Montana State for sure, U of Utah and MSU are imo the best colleges out west for skiing. The only reason I chose MSU over U of Utah was because Montana is beautiful and the engineering program at MSU is great. Either way you can't go wrong, skiing is very close by at both schools and academically they are great, so really its a matter of whether or not you want to see cowboys in montana or mormons in utah. I suggest you visit both schools and figure out which school gives you a better vibe.

Definitely the U! Took classes there last year, it's gr8. Awesome location too, and there's a rockin mexican place right next to it - Rio Grande.

we have a bomber engineering program here. Depends on what field you'd want to go into from there, but from what I know MecE is top notch here. Earth sciences departments are stellar too. Great skiing, great people (depends), great schooling, great outdoors in general.... I've really enjoyed my time here so far.

Thanks for the advice. I have visited both a couple of times. I know the good vibe at montana more becaue I know a lot of people going there and have hung out with them and met some cool people there. I don't know many people at Utah so I'd be nice to know more what it's like there. I'm sure I could meet a bunch of people like me that love to ski though

I went to MSU for 2 years. The skiing is epic and the vibe is pretty mellow, don't know much about the U. One thing I'll say against MSU is that it's getting quite overpopulated for their facilities it seems. Good weed tho :D

I don't understand why its such a huge deal. Yeah I do enjoy going to grocery stores and buying microbrews of anywhere from 5%-10% but pretty much every liquor store in utah is right next to a grocery store, its not a huge deal AT ALL. Its not a reason to not move to utah.

No, it gets deleted because you're spreading bullshit about things you have no idea about. Mormons have absolutely no influence in SLC, period. If you haven't live here for more than 6 months, shut the fuck up.

brand new business school set to open next fall, new freshman dorms 2 falls from now and then new engineering complex after that. Its growing like crazy

They run that shit. It's getting better, but it is still huge. It has the same issues you find anytime you are in a geographical area that is dominated by majority of a pretty insular culture.

Both schools are B(-) schools at best. I wouldn't say either is worth paying out of state tuition, and both will have relatively low ROI compared to other places that are around the same cost, or slightly more expensive.

That said, MT is easily my favorite state in the union. If I could get the right job in bozeman, I'd move there in a heartbeat.

both are good, i would say MSU has a better earth/ geo by far, and the engineering is good, but I'm not quite sure how U of U is good.

They're nice people and there's not need to have a pissing match about it, but utah is the only place I have ever been where I was told to put my beer away in an off campus house because the housemates would report it. I have never heard of campuses in other states actively going through the trash to find alcohol and pot to bust kids in dorms. Utah is a fine place, but part of the culture definitely accepts what is going on without questioning to a degree that is overbearing ime. Don't delete my shit because you disagree with what I say.

OP, come to Bozeman so you too can take selfies with KP in the walmart parking lot. living the dream fur sure

I'm not sure where you hear these stories, but 7 years ago when I was in the dorms no one ever searched trash and everyone on my floor drank.

Don't know much about the two schools, but as somebody attending college just down the street from the U, and who has visited MSU in the past when touring schools, the "vibe" at each location is way different.

I personally dislike SLC A LOT. It feels almost like one of those prop towns, where everything is just a plywood front, but there's actually nothing deeper going on. Plus, while the skiing is awesome, having to look at the orange-brown smog while you roll back down LCC to the city kinda reminds you of how nasty it is.

This all said, that's just my opinion! I know quite a few people that like SLC just fine, but I also know a lot that don't enjoy it here. MSU was in a nicer place.

Seriously OP, do you want to live in fresh mountain air or America's little Bejing?

Pay tens of thousands to go suck smog, deal with a delusional mountain sports culture, and try to shake off the eerie fucking vibe of SLC. That place has given me the willys since I was a little kid, a souless plywood front is a good way of putting it. I bet bozeman has better everything except attractive girls...

Coming from a butthurt recent college dropout though; if you are just going to college because its expected after you graduate and you mainly just want to go skiing then dont fucking go to college directly after highschool. It's a terrible idea, the system is flawed! take a year or two off and grow the fuck up before wasting $XX,000 on living in a prison(dorms), taking bullshit core classes, all while not knowing or understanding what you really are trying to get out of this experience.
