Man made cliffs on the mountain

Why haven't east coast mtns made little zones in their treed areas or on the side of their steeper but featureless runs, that have little 10-15 footers with good steep landings. Seems like it would make many of the mountains on the EC a bit more fun.

Heck why don't western mountains do it too? throw the little "cliff" signs at the top of the run and also to mark the feature and that should take care of the liability aspect, no?


It'd be pretty easy to make it look natural too. Just install a retaining wall with a concrete facing made to look like rock.

mtns already blasted that shit away in the 80's, I don't think they would care to spend money to bring it back.

i know mountain creek has something like that in their but its tough to get into cause the have it roped off so the gapers dont kill themselves. its but it isnt great.

3/10 wouldnt hit it again

I wouldnt think it would be too difficult. Just dig out a 15 yard stretch off the side of the steepest run on the hill, and refill it with large riprap(boulders) to a 60-70 degree slope. then pour concrete over the top. Do it in conjunction with the pouring on chairlift foundations to decrease startup costs. $5000 at most.

It would be easy to do by building some wooden platforms you could drop off. Something like the features Travis Rice built in the Supernatural Comp. Something like this

I cant necessarily speak for other, larger resorts, but personally my home mountain would never do this. Hell i got yelled at the other day for skiing literally 5 feet into the woods to hit a small 6 or 7 ft cliff and that was IN the park where helmets are REQUIRED at the entrance.

My hill sometimes has one. If you ever wondered what it's like to drop a cliff to solid ice then you can hit it. The landing is also sort of flat. I think, more often than not, it's closed because gapers kill themselves on it. It's very, very marked with fences and all but gapers tend to have zero accuracy when self-assessing their own skills.

Also, this is the first year in a while that there's been snow in places other than where they make it, so you might actually be able to ski tress a bit. Otherwise it's dirt, rocks and sticks.

Ha, should have read the whole thread first. This is exactly the feature I'm talking about. The fencing around it is so overdone that it's funny.

There are lots of natural cliffs on the east coast. Just gotta poke around.

Also some wood drops for summer/winter use as well. Some wooden features.

Some mountains won't want to fuck with it because as soon as you build something man made the resort becomes liable. That said there are plenty of places doing stuff in the woods.

Mount snow has that big rock pile cliff drop in the trail on nitro.

a couple years ago we had a flat rail with a 10-20 footer after depending on how fast you took it. was pretty fun.

Sad as it is, i doubt any mountains really do this. Poke around in the middle of the woods and see what you can find! Make sure you know what you're landing on!
