How do you transport your skis to and from the mountain?

So last Christmas I got a nice set of roof racks for my car. I also got a set of Thule ski carriers (the ones that are basically a big clamp) and I thought that would be the best for transporting my skis... Oh how wrong I was! The problem I have with them is that when driving to and from the mountain, my skis get covered in road dirt and salt from the cars in front of me. This leaves my skis gritty and rusty from the exposure.
My question is: how do you combat this? Do you have alternative methods for transporting skis?

Fold down your seats.

Open your trunk

Then put them in your car

That's what I've been doing but it limits the seating and I like to bring a bunch of people with me to the mountain.

Then you should invest in a Thule rocket box.

They're large enough to fit multiple pairs of skis and boards

Thats good to know, I just did some research of my own and holy hell they are expensive! I guess I'll have to deal with the skis in my trunk/backseat for now

Yeah a box is the way to go! I can fit about 4-5 pairs of skis in mine. Allows for a lot of open seats to bring more people.

For long trips I have wrapped saran wrap around the portion of my skis in front of the roof rack. Keeps the dirt and salt off of em, cheap sort term solution

Get a cheap ski bag/plastic just to keep road crap off of your skis until you get to the mountain.

You can easily buy a used roofbox for your car on craigslist or something, ive got mine for like 100$, totally worth it when u can fit atleast 5 pairs or skis or any other luggage u want like skiboots etc. Leaves plenty of room in the car!

Yeah saran wrap is the way to go. I have a hitch rack for my jeep which probably gets even more grime on my skis and wrapping definitely helps

Salt won't hurt your skis at all. People have been using ski racks on top of cars for year with out any trouble. If you are that concerned you can get covers for your bindings. That is really the only moving part where salt and grime can be an issue.
