Tripods and stabilizers have two completely different functions and are used for different things. Deciding wether to get one or the other doesn't make any sense.
I bought a tripod with the intentions of just using the tripod as a glidecam which didnt work very well at all. So i ended up buying a glidecam. And it made a world of difference for follow cams.
I plan on buying a nicer tripod down the road because both are nice to have.
What do you plan on doing more of? Follow cams or fixed position shots?
If youre down to invest the time/money into a good stabilizer I'd go that rout since it sounds like you want both follow and stationary shots. You can kinda do both with a stabilizer, since for a stationary you just hang out in one spot.

I truly do not understand why people don't do this. Video is a graphic art like any other, and a tripod is the best way to learn deliberate composition.
You can be the best glidecam filmer around but if you don't understand gesture or perspective, you kind of suck.
it feels so limited with a tripod, and its annoying to lug around, stabilizers like glidecams and flycams are so easy you just carry them all day with the camera on ready to shoot, and you can get tripod-like shots with practice, but you definetely need to invest in both.
