Cheapest way to ski Mount Hood.

Hey guys, hows it going? Im super interested in coming out to Mt. Hood sometime after my hill has closed and all the snow is gone. Last year I could have skied into late May, maybe early June. I get out of school mid to late May. Anyway Im planning on spending as much time in town as I can before i head to Hood. Im wondering whats the cheapest way? Obviously ill camp in my car, buy my own food before i leave, and all that stuff. What Im mainly asking about is pass prices. Ive heard so many different things about pass prices for the summer I just want to know whats the deal? Ive heard that you can buy a month summer pass for $100 or that id have to buy a whole year pass for $1000 if i think about staying for more than a week. I plan on staying 1-2 weeks. Im looking to come around mid June. Anyway I just want to hear from the locals to see how cheap it could be. Also, if anyone wanted to open up their coach for some of the time that would be nice. Its not ideal to stay in a car for 2 weeks straight so maybe a couple nights here and there inside would be nice. Im super chill about that stuff and will offer you a gift.

Please help me get to hood this year! i wanna slay some summer snow for as cheap as possible!

theres a spring pass in may and june i think that's $100. definitely the way to go...or just skin to the second lift and public park.

I'm not sure if the spring pass goes into June tho, think it stops around the end of May .

A summer pass is around $900, there are no other summer pass options. Lift tickets are about $60 daily, so it would make more sense to just buy a ticket every day you ski. The spring pass starts around late march and ends on Memorial day, so it will not work in June.

Live at the airstrip, hitchhike to timberline, and hike up to the park. For food just scavenge all the little campers bags for lunches like the ravens do.

Honestly the hike up is not that bad especially if the park is lower. Use that $60 for food or a comfortable sleeping pad.

and yeah, you can camp on the access road, hike up to the palmer with ease. avoid gypsy camps and kid camps, poach at will.
go into the timberline lodge once a week and buy the gourmet hot buffet breakfast, go downstairs and use the showers for free, you can also go to timberline lodge bar grab a drink and use the pool and hot tub!!!

Hiking up in definitely an option but they have gotten pretty strict on catching people poaching... you don't wanna get caught.

Spring Pass is such a screaming deal I always recommend that and if you're planning on staying for awhile try and get a job in Banquets and Timberline Lodge. The hours are really flexible and mostly nights. A lot of the kids that work in that department are there to shred and it's one of the more lax places to work. Everyday you work equals one day pass so it's a pretty viable option when you're not wanting to be broke for summer shred.


By that time in the year it'll be getting warm but there's still potential for snow, lots of people car camp but there's a bunch of places you can pitch a tent for little to no money. Just flip your sleeping pad every once in awhile if you crash in your car, it can get pretty nasty/ moldy and I've had a few friends get super sick from the it.

But hey it's a blast and I hope you head out here! Definitely worth the experience!

Yeah I'm planning on just going for a week to keep costs down. What would be the best time to go to mt hood in the summer in your guys opinions? Ok don't listen to N.L. he's probably some rich kid that is claiming that it's all free becaues mommy and daddy pay for it all... The buffet is super expensive (like 30 dollars just for the food plus tips) and the drinks will cost 5 dollars +. Now to be honest I think your best bet is to get a job at Timberline (could be possibly working with me). That way you can ride for free, make money, and be apart of a super chill community of workers. That way you would be surprised how many people will give you rides down and up to work and maybe even crash on there couch. They're plenty of places for you to camp or sleeping in your car if that's a option. Hiking up to the park sucks but they don't check usually but if your acting susipicous and hiking a rail when the park is lappable then they have some suspicion. If you're truely a warrior status then hiking will be the cheapest. But trust me the hike to the top of Mile can be gruesome is very tedious especially if you have to do it daily. (They may possibly catch on that your a poacher also). Dig to ride program didn't exisist last summer for Windells as I talked to one of the head park crew members of Windells. Though you have to be a warrior for dig to ride as I've heard you are met with the most horrible task to do and they litterally work you like a slave. Then you get to ride for like 3 hours. If you're planning on hiking to the top of the park go during early June as it will be the shortest hike though it may be the most suspicous as you can fully lap mile in June.

certain local residents get 4 free day passes that can be acquired at a certain ticket office... I walk up, drop a single name, and get a single pass as i was told to never take advantage of it... benefits of being a chill, friendly, and deserving kinda guy...

its up to you to figure out the rest...

Dont hike the park, park crew is on it now as well as the loss prevention, they hang out at bottom of Palmer with binoculars and watch the park and ridge lines. Make some trades with employees, they get pro passes which are 25 dollar lift tickets.. Maybe trade 15 bucks and a six pack for a ticket. Camping isn't too bad they've given good tips, but the campfire smell is almost a dead giveaway you're a "gypsy without a pass" will draw attention

theres a lifty or two who have fuckin eagle eyes and will scan people at the bottom, then go up to palmer and look for people they don't recognize from earlier. this has only happened to me once and i was just told to leave. but i have friends who've hiked to palmer every day and been fine. not a bad hike at all really, takes like an hour, or less if you're fast/in shape. good warm up, and a good way to save 60

During summer the only option is a $900 summer pass or a day lift ticket. the flex 10 thing is just for winter operations.

you can def hike up, its a classic gypsy move, but if you want to lap the park during june then you have to buy a lift ticket (its on the mile lift, which they check). if youre trying to hike a feature alone mid-day when everyone else is lapping, then park crew is going to get suspicious and ask to see a pass.

They usually scan tickets a few times a day, but the majority of the time they wont check.

Hmmmm. I'd lap the park for sure, probably get a ticket to stay safe too. Also I might head to beartooth instead as a cheaper option.

Remember though if you're trying to ride park especially in early June there is no need to lap Palmer unless you want to ride slush lines all day. The Timberline Park stays on Magic Mile all the way till mid August. The park last year stayed lappable until the first week of July where you had to hike 25 feet to get to the lift. So unless you're not filming or your really dedicated it might look suspicous if your the only one hiking a park that is fully lappable.

Hey wassup guys just found this thread and I have a few questions for the Mt.Hood connoisseurs. My friend and I have a bit of money saved up and we're planning on skiing and getting footy at Mt.Hood from early march to mid april.

The sleeping in our car option isn't really possible since we're from Québec and we're going there by plane, so for now we're thinking about renting something for early march and switch to camping when the weather gets more comfortable.

All the lodging options near the resorts are far from cheap tho (government camp and around), so we're wondering is there a way to easily travel everyday from the villages that are a bit further (like 30 minutes) from the mountain (bus, magic carpet,etc.)?

Also if you live near Mt.hood and have any tips for us or would be ready to offer cheap rides or lodging that'd be awesome.

I'm also going there mainly to film stuff for my movie so if anyone wants to get some footy there lemme know!

There is a bus that goes from Timberline, through government camp, and makes frequent stop all the way into Sandy (nearest real town to Mt. Hood) and back. Fare is $2 each direction. From Sandy there is a bus system that can take you all around Portland.

dude, regardless do beartooth. I might not get out this year but last year was incredible and I have been missing it bad, plus you could probably carpool with the Pocatello crew. So sad I'm gonna miss it, I might get out there for a few days even if I miss the event, it was that good
