Getting to Hakuba Cortina

I'm headed from Tokyo to Nagano the first week of March. Was hoping to get a couple of days of skiing in, watch some monkeys pee on each other in the Onsen and then head to Kyoto.

Seems like the move is to take the Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo to Nagano, then take a bus to Hakuba. What I haven't figured out is how to get to Cortina with all my ski gear - seems a little light on info.

Anyone have any insight or experience they can share? Would it be reasonable to make Cortina a base to stay for a few days or is it just as easy to stay in Hakuba and take a shuttle for 2 mornings to Cortina to ride?

My girl and I are headed that way in two weeks. We'll be there for 2 weeks... hit me up around the end of February and I'm sure I'll have some knowledge to drop. But for now, check out Evergreen's site for transportation info: http://www.evergreen-hakuba.com/hakubainfo/tokyo-hakuba.html

On the way there, we are taking the Hakubus from Narita right to Hakuba on the afternoon that we get in. It was about $80 to get there, but picks you right up from NRT and drops you off at your accommodation. We'll be doing the bullet train on the way back... but are using a Ta-Q-Bin service to send our gear back to Narita while we chill in Tokyo for a few days. I'd check that out too if you don't want to lug your gear around after you're done riding.

I would stay in Happo and get the bus to Hakuba in the morning.

There is a bus that leaves the information centre at 0720 which gets to Cortina at 0750 ish. Plenty of time to get a coffee and still get on first lift.

Hey - thanks guys this is awesome information. Wasn't sure if I should stay in Cortina or not so I think I'll take the shuttle.

Will hit you up at the end of the month - hope you get dumped on and enjoy the country. Japan is awesome!
