I have cheap logitech 5.1 speakers with a small sub that I've used on my tv for years and they work fine, you just need a special adapter to connect them to your tv in order to allow the surround sound to work. I think I paid like 50 bucks for the whole setup but it works well
My roommate and I have an LG cm4530 hooked up to our tv. 500w dual speaker and subwoofer with bluetooth. Copped for $120 on ebay with free shipping. There's a couple on there now for under $100
for your application, I would go with a soundbar/sub combo. look on amazon, they can range from 150-1200 bucks. If you want actual power behind the speakers, you're looking at spending upwards of $500 for a cheap receiver, sub and speakers. Source: I spent $900 on a $2500 system that I built myself for my dorm this year. my advice: check amazon for a soundbar/sub combo or go on craigslist. you will find hella deals on craigslist. You can spend $200 on a $500 system. PM me for information on brands, models and options. I am more than happy to help.
