Question about big mountain skiing

Hi there,
I have been thinking about this question for a while and I cannot seem to find an answer. The question is how do pro big mountain skiers become pro big mountain skiers. I realize they make their money through films and pro model skis and sponsorships but how do they get these sponsorships in the first place if they aren't competing in freestyle ski competitions like the xgames?
Thanks,
Eric

Most of them start by competing on the freeride world tour

There are lots of big mountain events. Also exposure through edits/films grabs the attention of companies. Pretty much the same as park skiing really

Photos are super important for big mountain guys too. Look at powder and freeskier, half the photos are of dudes shredding lines, not urban.
But yeah then FWT, and the regional freeride events. Start with a shop sponsorship and work your way up.

Thanks for the input!
I am 16, would it be smart if I get involved with some regional freeride events? And then maybe if I prove myself go to the FWT qualifying series when I'm 18?

You wash dishes at Alta until TGR invites you to Alaska. Just ask Sage.

Freeride comps are not the only way. There are a lot of big mountain riders that dont compete or ever competed. Also just competing is not enough. Even if you are getting good results.
Companies are interesting in sponsoring if you can give them something. Put out different kinds of content, get followers, get media attention. So video's, pictures, articles etc. If you get a lot of followers on instagram, facebook etc you can get sponsorships pretty easy.
Brody Leven is a good example. Doesnt compete, doesnt do rando races or anything. But just skiing some cool stuff is not enough. Things like his pedals to peaks project got a lot of attention. Lots of photo's, stories, interviews and video content came from that.
Find out what you want to do and think of ways you can interest companies, what can you offer them?
