The 2015 (unthreadworthy) movies thread

Here's a thread to discuss the films of 2015. Mainly the ones that aren't quite threadworthy, because not every film appeals to mass audiences and generally those that don't bring the most interesting discussion.

Thread rules:
1. Release date: any time in 2015, that's either theatrical release or premiere, not DVD/Blu Ray/Netflix or whatever. Film festivals count to this, if you're lucky enough to live near a decent festival (London and Cannes FTW).
2. No shit talking. Keep the quality high. Your opinion isn't right, even if you're a Dutch med student. Try to write more than a line in each post.

Please keep it to 2015, there are countless other threads just to recommend good films from other years (here's one) or hype up future releases. This thread is for now.

Whiplash is excellent. I saw it in London last year and I really can't wait to see it again. The last half hour was intense, and I really appreciate films that can do that without guns and explosions and shit. I'll write about it here again when I've seen it again, but that won't be for a few weeks.

Also I'm really looking forward to Selma. Two of the last three major biopics (Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game) I found very disappointing, and I'm going to pass on seeing American Sniper in cinema. Critics have been all over Selma, and as little as I care about awards (why should someone else tell me what films I should like?), it does sound like a major injustice was dealt at the Oscar nominations.

Finally: STAR WARS HYPPPPPPEEEEEEEEE

Post-script: A note I left out of the OP because of time-dependence: we already have an American Sniper thread, and maybe that's best to leave AS discussion to that thread because of all the politics caught up in that film. Let's just enjoy the cinema.

Theatrical release was the 19th of January, at least here. Therefore it counts. I saw it in October at the London Film Festival.

I'm not really hyped for any movie this year, the big blockbusters all seem rehashes, reboots, prequels and sequels of drawn out story arcs.
Even the indie stuff slated for Sundance and the IFFR seems dull.

At least we can hope that Gaspar Noé's 'Love' will be released in 2015, knowing him it will contain more functional aesthetic sex then an actual porn movie.

bumping cos I've seen some films lately. Both were fantastic.

Whiplash (2014, theatrical release January)

Blood, sweat and tears is the theme here, and there's lots of all three. JK Simmons is superb if more caricature, Teller is also fantastic. Terence Fletcher is a failure, his star pupil is dead, he is ageing and he is yet to mark the world of jazz. Andrew Nieman is his last hope. Yet through all the tension, it's the small moments that resonate the most. The band turns up for Niemans first practice, an extended family meal, Nieman and Fletcher's discussion during that practice; these are what make for a broad study of ambition. There are two twists in the last half hour, the first makes little sense and doesn't feel like it contributes too much to the story; the second is predictable yet a wonderful character moment for Fletcher, setting the stage for a breathtaking finale.

Selma (February)

Of the four recent major biopics (also the Imitation Game, Theory of Everything and American sniper, only the last I am yet to see) this is the only one so far that has impressed me. And holy fuck did it impress me. Selma ditches the conventional youth-life-impact-death-legacy formula and solely focuses on the events of the few weeks King spends in Selma, Alabama. We aren't being told a story we already know, instead we see a detailed analysis of King's methods, his opinions, his personality, glimpses of his sacrificed private life. Good balance between family and activist is achieved effortlessly, this is where ToE and Imitation Game struggled the most.

I really enjoyed the intensity Oyelowo brings to King. The acting is, in general, wonderful. Tim Roth is the weakest link, maybe that's because I can't get over his accent. The government as the enemy works well on some levels but less well on others. Nothing would be lost if the FBI scene was completely cut out, as would many of the higher office scenes. That said, if the resistance the president gives brings a whole new level of emotion to his speech in the closing moments, and it's a fairly confused emotion.

It's taken a very long time to make an MLK biopic, and thank god the task fell to Ava DuVerney.

Besides Star Wars, I'm stoked on Mad Max: Fury Road.



I remember watching the Mad Max movies with my dad and loved them. Fast, badass cars, post apocalyptic fights, hot chicks and badass action scenes. Plus now with the special effects that they couldn't do before. It releases May, 15 in the US

Most excited for Chappie. I'm a big scifi fan and Blomkamp is doing the genre right these days. I know Elysium didn't live up to the shadow of District 9, but I still liked it. And this looks great as well. Although I will say I hope after this movie he changes the setting. Maybe haha. The subversive culture clash of District 9 can only be used so many times, so hopefully it goes out with a bang.

Haha that hit the nail right on the head. I've read the book too but I hope they can add a little more to the story. I guess we'll see.

I love anything that has to do with space so I'm still excited.

It sounds like most of the crew for the revenant didn't entirely respect Iñáritu and Lubezski's decisions to film everything under natural light, in the snow.

Also, gold quote from Iñáritu: “If we ended up in green screen with coffee and everybody having a good time, everybody will be happy, but most likely the film would be a piece of shit,”

Trainwreck might be the best romcom to date, amy schumer is hilarious.

Ted 2 was funny for sure, definitely not as good at the first but I expected that so I wasn't let down.

Looking forward to Starwars, especially after the comic con BTS video.

A 65mm 6K monster that doesn't even laugh at red's and sony's. It knows it operates on not just another level but in another game.

Even in shitty 1080p youtube compression, them highlight falloff, the ridiculous shadow detail, the wide but perfectly clean rectilinear image. The detail, the insane detail. The cleanliness, so sterile.
