so currently i am using an red mutiny helmet wich is about 4 years old now, the helmet still looks great in the way that you cant really see any cracks, dents or whatsoever. But I did make some gnarly crashes with it where it did its protection pretty well.... one of those crashes was an 40mph headfirst crash into an hard pack.
so my question is: should I, even though i dont see any damages, buy a new helmet?

I personally would.
The outer layer may look ok, but you may not know if the inner bit is compromised or not, especially after that 40mph crash you said you've had.
Better to be safe than sorry.

If in doubt buy yourself a new helmet. Most manufacturers recommend a lifetime of 5 years for a helmet because the plasticizer of the plastics evaporate. This will result in a helmet that breaks rather than absorb the impact.

I was using the same helmet for a couple seasons and had some bad falls. Ski patrol as well as my local shop told me that as soon as you start to see cracks running threw your helmet its time to get a new one or your brain is going to look like scrambled eggs.
Check out the SMith holt thats what I have.
