Bad conditons in the West vs the Midwest

I am leaving for a trip to Steamboat tomorrow. They haven't had a lot of snow and every review is "pure ice" "bad conditions" "wasting your time". Here in Wisconsin, there are days when you could put on ice skates and skate down the runs. How would you compare "bad conditions" in the west to the stuff that we deal with here in the midwest?

It snowed half an inch here in Minnesota. Now we might have a whole inch on the ground! The actual hills aren't really terrible. Still couldn't get an actual urban trip though.

yea you will still have fun. even the worst conditions are usually not as bad as midwest ice, and the terrain is so much bigger and more diverse you can always find something fun to do. check out sander's edit from the bird last year. those conditions were about as bad as it could get at snowbird, but there is still a ton of sick stuff to do. i'm guessing steamboat will be similar

The ice in utah is nothing like the EC/Midwest. Its like soft enough to where you can get a good edge going.

if you're from wisco you wont notice all that much and they'll be better than what we have by far. A bad day out west is still better than a good day here, but if it's really shitty it'll be easy to tell who the midwesterns are.

really though. just go out and ski. people out west piss and moan about the conditions too fucking much, when its still infinitely better than skiing 300 vert in the middle of Indiana or some wack shit.

yeah I live in Utah now but I'm from Oregon where cement is a promise, but here in Utah unless its 60 inches of fresh pow over night then its "icy" and I'm over here like "bitch shut the hell up you don't know what icy is".

and what constitutes a shitty day out west? blowing snow? low visibility? cold temps?

some days that people deem "horrible" in Utah at least have been some of the most blower days ever. just you, your friends, liftys runnin lifts, and deep pow to ski to yourselves.

People complain so much out here in the west. It drives me nuts. There's Somedays where they do suck, but like previously stated, some people need fresh snow for good conditions. It's all fun either way.

Minnesota hasn't had more than 1/4" of fresh snow in over a month. Getting 2" of real snow groomed into a park makes an incredible difference over the man made surface we've had this year.

Hey, Summit at Snoqualmie just got Alpental open this past weekend, helluva lot better than some other recent bad years in WA.

You could just man up like the rest of the hippies in this state and just accept the fact that sometimes you'll need to deal with some occasional bush to have your fun.

If I'm able to click in and hit some rails/jumps, go fast, or just make some turns, I rate the conditions as good. Wether it's a pow day, a sheet of boilerplate ice, or a couple rails in a pile of slush on the side of a hill.

If this conditions suck just modify your trip's skiing to partying ratio until it's fun. I spent 3 weeks in Breck during the 11-12 season which was fucking awful and I still had a blast.

Oh i was there. I have had 4 terrible winters in a row, including this one, but atleast this time around the skiing is a good deal better than where i moved from...which is just plain sad.

The sand in my vag stems from the fact that i moved up here only a few months ago and missed out on all the discounted season pass prices leading me to buy a snoqualmie pass i the hopes that i could go rip nightime bumps and straight air jumps 3 night during the week.

I doubt i would be nearly this ornery if i had just gotten a crystal pass. Haven't been to stevens yet - can't justify the day ticket with such shit conditions. I assume crystal becomes a whole helluva lot less featured as it fills in, but from what i saw it looks fucking sick.



Look, skiing in rain isnt overly great but managable with good outerwear. skiing in rain on limited terrain with shit coverage just plain sucks. And the really bad part is, there is nothing within a weekend roadtrip that is doing well.

Yeah skiing in the rain isn't that bad if it's a little warm, but if the snows not there from the start it's pretty rough. Buy a snow cone maker and get that shit rolling round the clock
