tuning kits

i am looking at some tuning kits like the dakine deluxe kit and the test pilot waxing kit. have any of you used these kits, or have another one that is good? i have never tuned myself so i want one that has instructions. also i dont know what all i will need to tune my skis myself.

if you could help me out that would be great. thanks.

you can go to a ski shop and if you ask um what would be right for that ski, and how to, they will most likely show you the kit and how to use it.

and then they will most likely proceed to charge you an assload of cash that you wouldn't pay if you were smart and searched for some packages online

do not buy retail shit seperatly from a shop....way too expensive

http://www.tognar.com/ this is a really good website... it has many different options for kits... read up on all the info it has then make a decision... hopefully you know how to tune your skis right

you don't need an expensive iron unless you are tuning your skis for racing.... the cheapest one will do fine.... make sure you have a good brush for structuring your base though...

so for an edge file do i want one that has an adjustable angle, or do i just want to keep it at 90 degrees?

I have one thats 89/99 degrees. Basically you should be looking for a kit that has an edge detuner (I forget the exact name, but it's just like a rough rock shaped like an eraser), a brush for structuring the base after waxing, and a metal and plastic scraper. I got a SWIX kit real cheap and it even came with two sticks of P-Tex which has come in handy. You save so much money tuning your own skis.

www.reliableracing.com has nice little kits if you go to your local good will you can find a iron without any holes they are pretty old but will work make sure it does not get to hot

just keep it at 90 degrees...don'e mess with a bevel unless you are racing... 90 is fine as long as you do it right...

okay, so just keep the 90. and also has anyone used the dakine kit, the test pilot kit, or the swix kit because i am not sure which one to get.

oh, and one more thing i dont know. i have seen edge tuners that do both the side edge and the base edge. will all tuners do this or do i need to get a special tuner do do both parts of the edge?

you need a 90 degree file guide for your side edge and a good file, a millbaster file for your base edge (you don't need a guide for that), a gummy block a brush with both steel and plastic bristles, some plastic and metal scrapers and a cheap ass iron ( Igot mine at a garage sale)

whoever said you need a brush for 'structuring your base' is ill informed. you dont put structure into your base with a brush, at least you shouldnt.

okay, so i bought the dakine kit tonight, but i think i might take it back. the was doesnt look that good, and some other stuff is just decent. also in the instructions it looks like it is for a snowboard, so i dont know if you tune different for skis because it said to make the edges sharp in the middle, but around the tip and tail you detune them so they are somewhat dull. is this right? this seems wrong because why would you detune the edges?

you detune the tip and tail so they dont snag as much going into and out of turns...otherwise your skis are to grabby and you catch edges and cant slide or skid through turns raelly.

I do the opposite though, I deburr and sharpen them everywhere except under the binding for rails. They feel incredible, in fact I am done taking em to the shop unless they are superfuckt I finally did a good job after years.

^no... he's right...for both snowboards and skis you are suppossed to drtune the tips and tail so you don't snag an edge.... just slighty though...

The brush for structuring is very important, and I wish I had know that when I first started tuning. After you wax, the bottom of the ski is obviously smooth. Think about that like suction cup - If you flatten that against a wet surface there is going to be a suction force which will basicallly make waxing pointless. Structuring is just the term for 'scratching' lines into your bases, into the wax specifically, where excess water can bead through. It's similar to tires and their treds.

get a horsehair brush, and go from tip to tail, never sideways, and you will get good structure

Use a medium brass or nylon brush for post scrape cleaning. Don't bother with a horsehair brush unless you plan on laying down flouro overlays.
