How did the internet help or hurt skiing?

Newschoolers peaked my interest in skiing. Definitely helped bring people together.

How would I be able to make it through my classes if there weren't any sick edits to watch online? With that being said, thanks internet!

I'm guessing it's because ski movies used to be a very special and rare thing that people enjoyed a lot because they were so uncommon. Today you can go on newschoolers and be entertained with hours of new footage a day, not as special.

That is my point against the internet. Because pros are constantly putting out mini edits and whatnot, people are less inclined to buy the actual movie because they can always see what everyone is doing. Movies usually come out in like September, way after the season has actually ended and people now don't need to wait until months later to see what happened because they are always able to online. I think it has really take a toll on the movie companies with lost revenue, which could be why some are only putting out movies every other year and have a smaller budget to work with.

This is a good thread. I'm sitting in class arguing with myself. The internet helped expose the sport. It gave companies the ability to promote skiing and sell gear to places without immediate access to ski shops.

The internet and newschoolers has drastically increased mainly young skiers self consciousness in the park IMO.

By this I mean that thousands of kids log on here everyday and watch all the best content that the ski world has to offer. Everyday there are edits that come out that could have potentially been the closing segment in any of the biggest movies 5 years ago. When people watch this much amazing content everyday I feel as though it creates the impression that everyone in the ski world is amazing at park skiing thus making young impressionable kids who made not be fully confident in themselves very self conscious when they enter any random park. The idea that every skier in the ski world is amazing can make people feel inadequate about their skills which could in turn lead them to trying less, progressing at a slower rate (because they are scared of being judged) or not going in the park at all.

Obviously there are massive upsides to the amount of available content but I always see kids posting in teh forums about judgement in the park and being scared to try stuff because of embarrassment and I'm not quite sure if this is true or if its just a figment of their imagination because of their feelings of inadequacy based on the idea that everyone in the ski world is the next fucking downtown Bobby Brown

For myself, the internet--and more specifically Newschoolers--is the reason I started skiing. I had snowboarded for years and then my brother convinced me to get an NS account. Watching and reading about skiing made me realize how much more interesting it was than boarding and I switched over about a month later.

I think watching videos of amateur skiers doing rad tricks makes you want to try more stuff, in the sense that when you're young and only watch pro skiing videos you may get discouraged.

It's nice to interact with a community of skiers with common interests.

Don't care. Yeah it sucks, but I have not felt the need to buy any ski movies the past two years. I've seen a few, but the don't seem to be what they used to. Maybe I'm just getting older and am less stoked on watching others ski.

I definitely remember when you didn't know what next years gear looked like until it showed up in the shops usually in September. Occasionally you might have got your hands on a print catalog. But it was usually a surprise. On the other hand, back then you were limited to whatever brands your local shop carried. Now you can literally have anything.......and I like that!

I dissagree. It revolved ski movies.

Before, all fucking ski movies looked the same in the 90's. In the early 2000's cameras became available and amateurs began filming and editing better edits than ski movies. With internet becoming an everyday thing, unknowns were putting out better edits than a payed crew.
Now, major producers must team up better skiers and put out better editing so people prefer buying the 45min movie than finding 1000 gaper edits before finding that one good edit.

Ski movies are so much more diverse with different abilities, locations and styles. Internet is also a great place for free advertisement. NS is a site for that. Major productions and unknowns can promote their video to a paying audience. Im sure Stept wouldn't have the same success without the internet.

It didn't help or hurt skiing, it made it irrelevant. I live 10 minutes from Breck and had nothing to do today. So, I went online to watch an edit or something to get me hyped. Three hours later, I had downloaded a bunch of music and watched some random videos on youtube and figured it was too late to go. Why actually go out into the cold and risk getting hurt as you hurdle down some god forsaken hill with plastic boots haphazardly fixed to wooden planks by odd spring contraptions when you can just sit at home, watch someone else do it and have a few day beers.

I would say it helped because websites like NS really brings the skiing community together through the sharing of videos, pictures, and stories on this website. Without NS I would not watch as many ski videos as I do and profit from all the good vibes that come from NS.

Freeskiing as a whole is deffinately better off because of the internet. That said I also think that it is killing ski movies.

Newschoolers is the original social media website. Before this site, everyone was ok. Skiing wasn't dying. It was thriving. After this site launched, it linked ski kids together all over the East Coast then trickled it's way out west.

The Internet helped skiing develop more of a community. It hurt it the same way the Internet has hurt lots of media in that often the Internet prefers quantity over quality. We're seeing the shift now to high quality, kick-ass media being on the Internet. Look at Netflix original series. Look at sites like Medium and Grantland. Curation and craft are the next wave and I for one cannot wait.

It definitely makes it a lot easier to find the best ski conditions. I can roll out of bed at 7 am and check Bridger and Big Sky's snow report and make a decision of where im going on the spot. That didn't happen before the Internet.

People pirate the shit out of ski movies unfortunately. Also with the amount of quality content available online for free people aren't willing to spend nearly as much on ski movies that cost $20+ as they used to be.

This. A few years ago there was like 5 movies a year with all the top riders, I bough one or two and watched the others with friends. The movies were all pretty good, with the best shots of the past season filmed in different locations on original features. Of course there is a lot more movies or edits now, but the large majority of them has just no interest and it has become hard to find some good stuff, with every kid posting his go pro edit of the day on the internet, doing the same tricks on the same park. Today everyone is filming all the time even if there is nothing special at all, you see some people more interested to show what they do than to actually ski. As said before it's now quantity over quality.
On the other side internet helped unknown riders to show their skills and get some recognition, and it probably progressed skiing because every new trick that is filmed and released online can be learned by someone else quite fast.

I think the constant connection has made everything more derivative. Before, with the distribution lag, content creators were on their own with what ideas might work and without forums or message boards it was hard to know how something was received. Now with so much media and immediate feedback (good and bad) it's easy to predict what kind of response a photo or video concept is going to get. I think that it may lead to people taking less chances and following a proven formula for success and maybe avoiding styles or ideas which have had a negative reception in the past. Whatever tho, can't force people to do the wacky things i want to see.

Late to the party, but I have been chewing on this for awhile. Clearly NS has had a huge impact. Let me give you the Old Guy's perspective.

Believe it or not, there was a time when throwing a 3 was a big deal, and there weren't many people doing it. If you could do one, you were definitely going to get laid, unless you were as utterly uncool as I was. If you could do a 7, you were in an elite club, and the same could be said of a back flip. If you did double backs, you were an aerialist and most real skiers thought you were gay. If you could do or had attempted a 10, you were from another planet. Notice that 5's, 9's, and corks are not mentioned because no one had even thought about it. Progression either happened in your own head, by feeding off of the guys you hung with, or by watching the latest Warren Miller or Dick Barrymore movies.

The first time I saw a TC episode, my brain melted. How could random guys be doing this incredibly epic shit in their back yard? This definitely inspired me. And it clearly inspired a bunch of others as well, because it wasn't long before I saw somebody do a hippy killer at my hill. The guy wasn't that great, but he had obviously seen Andy do it and decided to figure it out. Progression happens way faster than it would otherwise, and New Schoolers is the primary catalyst. It all started here. Yes, there will be some plateaus, because it gets tougher to come up with something new that will blow everyone's mind. We are clearly a bunch of spoiled children, and we get whiny when we are not sufficiently entertained.

So some of us will watch the latest Kelly Sildaru footage, and decide to hang up our skis and take up Extreme Knitting. Others have watched TC footage and have decided to try and do it better: Real Skifi. NS takes the entire freeskiing world and puts it in a little room and allows everyone to feed off of each other. It is extremely unique.

Think about it like this. Skateboarding has been around since the 70's; the new school movement was just getting started in the late 90's. Skate boarding had some movies that you could buy and you could pick up magazines, but it didn't have a NewSchoolers. Ponder for a moment where skateboarding could be today if it had a Forum site like this back in the 70's and 80's. It may have never experienced the dark years when all parks were shut down and only the most avid skaters kept going.

I see NewSchoolers as a huge pot of stew with people adding ingredients from all over the planet. Sometimes it tastes better than at other times, but it always fills you up, and it usually makes you fart like a pack mule.
