Skiing Mecca

Those of you slightly familiar with the Islamic religion know of Mecca. Mecca has come to represent the idea of an epicenter or place of greatest importance for the practice in question. On that note what do you guys feel is the skiing Mecca! (focusing specifically on skiing areas not like Tom Wallisch's childhood bedroom).

Chamonix, no out of bounds. Huge mountains. Pretty much the best place to be up you're a big mountain skier.

Ski Mountaineering = Chamonix (runner up - Rogers Pass)
Pow = Japan (runner up - Rogers Pass)
Park = Summit County (runner up - Whistler)
Racing = Austria? (runner up - Austria?)
Apres Ski = somewhere in the Alps (runner up - your local ski bar)

chamonix looks pretty shitty for skiing honestly, the snow looks crappy, the lines look like a pain in the ass. maybe if you like the climbing around part more than the skiing it's good.

So where's the difference, isn't Big Mountain all about Lines?

If so you can exchange the Alps in favor of Alaska (or even British Columbia).

Staticchamonix looks pretty shitty for skiing honestly, the snow looks crappy, the lines look like a pain in the ass. maybe if you like the climbing around part more than the skiing it's good.


Many big lines there are gnar, that's why they might look like a pain and not for everyone. But you are pretty much right with everything else, even within the Alps Cham is regarded as the mountaineer's but not the skier's choice.

In my mind the places with 'the best' skiing are different from the places of 'greatest importance.'

I would say skiing's mecca is the Alps.

I suppose you are right. Mecca would probably be the Tyrol region of Austria.

Somewhere by St. Paul central high school. Not sure where exactly though. It looked tight! He filmed a hit/fall from his parked car, pretty mellow.

I know people say Alaska, but I think skiings mecca has to be somewhere in the Alps. Skiing originated out there and there is something to be said about skiing out of villages where people have been living longer than the U.S. or Canada have been countries. It's pretty surreal.
