Can you use powder skis in the park?

All depends what you consider a powder ski. Living on the ice coast my powder ski is about 100mm in the waist. Moment PB&J, ON3P Jeronimo / Kartel, etc are all great park skis that also have versatility to ride anywhere on the mountain. The only disadvantage I experience with a wider ski (100mm vs 85mm)in park is swing weight and the fact that there is simply more ski to focus on and handle. I definitely think a stiffer wider ski is much better for landing big tricks compared to floppy skinny buttery park skis. Depends on how you ride to be honest and what you like to do most. If you want to do a lot of technical spins on and off rails I would stick with a narrower waist. There are very few park rats using 105mm + waist skis, at least in my neck of the woods.

Tried out my 191 Caylors in the park recently, it just felt like way to much ski to be swinging around a whole lot. That said, I know someone who skis on Sir Francis Bacons in the park pretty frequently. It's all preference

I think its a blast, having 110 underneath your feet in the park is just different but its fun, made surface swaps ridiculously easy for me

I'm 5'9 and ski on 184cm 110 underfoot skis in park, anything smaller just feels tiny to me. i don't notice any difference with spinning compared to my 175cm 78 underfoot troublemakers.

i love the feeling of stomping a big air on pow skis. moguled out landings are not an issue. wider skis are also stable as fuck on rails. my 187 semi-reverse sidecut skis even kill it on jumps too.

only thing i would say is if your tips are really long, like they would be with a long ski mounted behind centre, spinning onto or coming switch onto rails can result in tip catching pretty easily.

Doesn't prevent you from spinning no, but it is different. Park skis (and skiing park in general) you are more able to adjust your rotation mid air. With bigger skis, getting the spin set right is more critical because that's more mass that you have to adjust if your rotation is off. Just like skiing powder, if you don't set a spin perfectly you're pretty fucked which is why throwing a 3 off a drop into powder in a way is a lot harder than a 540-720 or so in the park

2013s Rossignol super 7 skis are the worst park ski ever. Their anvil weight and floppy tips make even the best 360s look like crap. But for shits and giggles, I take them for a spin in the park.

Being on the ice coast was well, I ski my SFB in the park and absolutely love it. They're super stable on rails and buttery. Am I good at park? No, I can barely 270 out of a rail. Am I having a blast on a wide ski that rips everywhere else on the mountain as well? Of course.

No, you can't. FIS rules clearly state that any skis used in a terrain park have to have a waist width under 100mm. Anything bigger and ski patrol will confiscate your skis.

Nah, but seriously, fat skis in the park are fun as shit, especially when it's slushy. They might not be as easy to throw around during tricks, but it feels pretty awesome to have such a wide platform on jump landings. I used to rip the old EP Pros (130mm underfoot) in the park and loved it.

I only ride my 3.0 nowadays in all terrain, can take around 720's on small jumps in the park easy but they are so incredibly light.
In my opinion they are the most fun you can have on skis and I don't see myself ever going back to some skinny and horrible park skis.

I occasionally rip Hellbents in the park and its always a good time. Not gonna be doing any c00l future spins on them though

I dont like to limit myself by my equipment.

I spent the summer hitting jumps and sliding jibs on TSTs with dynafit tech bindings.

3 weeks ago I was skiing giant ice moguls in Squaw on JJs.

Today I was doing my best to terrify the race team whilst straight lining the face of Mammoth on park skis.


Just because it isn't the best option doesn't mean it wont be fun. You'll be a better skier for it.

But if you're asking because you want a one quiver ski... gear talk.

run what cha got. the quiver is still a relatively new thing in skiing, you might catch some shit from people but i say fuck 'em. there are kids that kill it no matter what skis they are on (ian borgeson fucking slays on anything, including snow blades) and as long as your having fun the skis you are on will be the best skis on earth.

Yeah but you can get plenty of really good park skis for under 400. Getting nomads just because they r on sale just to use them in the park is a waist

I know but I really want to go with one of the brands like On3p (fat edges) icelantic (hard to beat up), hg (warranties impacts damage). I’ve already had 2 years of line skis and 2 years of armada and like it, but want to switch it up. Also my dad (agreesive skier) has icelantics and skis like 60+ days a year and has had them for 6 years and there is barely a scratch.

Yo - does anyone remember a European kid that made a bunch of park edits while riding on the Salomon Rocker 2. This was in like 2011/2012, when I believe the Rocker 2 was like 120cm underfoot and was built to be a true pow ski, not the all mountain free ride ski that we know it as today.

Anyone remember this? His edits kind of took NS by storm when they first dropped... kid was shredding rails and stuff with some big ass skis on.

Theres a difference between your dad skiing "aggressively" and you bashing your skis against rails all day. Also idk what you're on but $400 isn't that good of a deal dude...

Why you would want nomads if your going to use them specifically for park and the reason why you think that they're more durable is just what was confusing me. Whatever dude you have free will to do whatever all I'm saying is that $400 isn't a great deal since in my personal opinion you could find a more park oriented ski for cheaper that would be a better deal. Maybe not where you live I suppose.

A buddy of mine runs his J skis Vacations in the park. They are'nt ideal for rails though stomping big tricks is significantly easier than on traditional park skis. It all depends on what type of skier you are, your riding style and preference of ski feel.

Yes go for it. You're better off with a pow ski that is comfortable yet somewhat limited in the park rather than a park ski that sucks in pow.

I ski fat 115+ skis almost every day and spend most days OB, but recent low snow and considerable avy conditions have prompted me to mix it up and try some narrower skis riding hot inbounds laps. This week I tried the Icelandic Nomad SNKYs 85mm underfoot, 191cm length models center mounted.
Initial impression was great... really fun to spin with less swing weight and rail turns on the way down between hits. Also felt that when riding switch I was carving turns as opposed to scrubbing speed washing out like I guess I do on pow skis. Downside was it took me a while to learn how to properly revert both ways...with my pow skis I rarely catch an edge, while the SKNYs would grab and throw me down hard if I miss-timed or miss-weighted reverting or landed something a bit over/under rotated. Overall I really liked them given the hard conditions, though I would like to try the 95s or a shorter length. I'm certainly better suited to riding fatter skis but it's humbling to try different styles of skiing to mix it up and make the mountain big again.
