I guess this guy didn't have any avy gear and wasn't allowed to ride Schlasmans (clearly states you need it on the map as well as everywhere else) and proceeded to lose his mind and demand his money back, apparently at 3pm after skiing all day. What a dick head, funny video though.

No. And they don't need to.

Montana Code Annotated 23-2-736. Duties of skier.

(2) A skier:

(d) shall obey all posted or other warnings and instructions of the ski area operator; and
(e) shall read the ski area trail map and must be aware of its contents.

The guy in the video violated (d) by skiing past the sign saying you need a beacon in Slushmans without reading it, and violated (e) by not reading the trail map, which clearly states that a beacon is required.

Big Couloir and North Summit Snowfield at Big Sky also require avy gear.

DockEllisThe ridge is in bounds, avy controlled, and patrolled. Honestly, I think BB requires it mostly to keep gapers off the ridge because there is some hairy terrain they would inevitably get stuck in.


I think this is the real reason. Someone who doesn't know what they're doing could easily die back there.

That's Montana state law not a skier's code you dingleberry. By law, he should have been aware of the information printed on the trail map BEFORE going up the lifts. The giant reflective yellow sign above the guy's head also states the requirement. That's above and beyond what the law requires. Do you think resorts should have to give everyone their money back if a lift ends up being on wind hold all day too? if a consumer chooses to not research or ignore readily available information, that's the consumer's fault, not the business's. The business should not be required to spoon feed that information to every single fucking customer. It's not like Bridger is trying to hide anything from people.

There are super obvious signs all the way to the lift stating you need a transceiver to ski this terrain, and its very obviously highlighted on the trail map

the dude is a knob fur sure and the transceiver rule helps keep people like him off of that lift, the terrain it accesses is serious to say the least.

oh and, you heard wrong, tickets are really $152. Plus you have to hike for your lines at bridger, so plebeian, tram4lyfe, everyone knows the real gnargnar is up the street at big sky. But really, just don't go to montana its cold and windy and grey.

No they're actually not. My friend was just there 2 weeks ago and it wasn't more than $55... not to mention they rented a cabin at the base of the resort for cheaper than a yurt in most places.

doesn't that sort of serve the point though? this is a very dangerous activity in certain locations, which is why these rules have to be in place. if they let people in without the right gear, as soon as a guy like this got hurt it'd probably be the resort's fault in his mind

and telling every single customer that? that's really not reasonable logistically. if you know enough about skiing to ski that stuff, then you shouldn't be so surprised that they require gear for it

plus, look at the trail map. the message is hard to miss

are you really trying to paint what i said as derogatory? "above my paygrade" is an expression that means it's not your place to deal with something. i didn't hear her say she was in charge (and someone else also replied to me that the dude at the end was a manager approaching the guy

my point was that the person sitting in the window isn't the one who makes policy or whose responsibility it is to explain it to irate customers. that wasn't anything to do with the person herself. take a fucking lap dude

I dunno, man. What this essentially is like is like saying "you didn't tell me that this car you sold me doesn't operate under the ocean".

Like, you'd have to be an absolute moron and not understand the very basic concept that your purchase of a lift ticket is subject to you obeying the rules of the mountain - most of which have to do with safety. You pay $X to use the lifts and ski the terrain all within the conditions the mountain imposes - and can impose at any time, unilaterally.

If they close a part of the hill because it's being avy controlled, do they need to tell you that at the ticket booth? No. Are they required to tell you that one of the chairlifts is out of service because of high winds, or because they're repairing it? No. How about park passes; when dad and kids from South Dakota come out on vacation, does the ticket seller say, "here are your day passes! Now, just so you know, if you want to use the terrain park you need to purchase a park pass." Well, most places with park passes sure don't do that.

Basically I think you're wrong.

I suggest going to ski it! From MN here and we've gone on trips out west since 08. Went to Bridger for 3 days in 09 and hit it perfect on day one received 23 inches of fresh. Enjoyed it so much we went back next year.

Still to this day Bridger has been my number 1 day in the mountains which includes trips to CO, WY, and UT.



Any Bridger locals in the thread that can confirm the business of Bridger? I've heard from buddies who now live out there that it has gained a lot more popularity.

part of bridger's appeal is that it is a 20 minute drive from a college town. Bozeman as a whole is steadily growing, the college is on an expansion kick and accepting pretty much anyone out of state to fund all its new development, and the town is a super popular place for young families to move to raise their children in an outdoor paradise. All of this means more people in town to ski Bridger. I don't know numbers for this year, but since they put in Schlasman's there has been a steady uptick in season passes sold.

big sky's purchase of moonlight didn't help things either, big sky bumped up prices across the board at moonlight to push people to buy the biggest skiing in america passes (which it isn't with pc/canyons connected) so a lot of families that would have gone on vacation to moonlight are now coming to bridger

to any nser's thinking of visiting, drop me a pm, I don't know the ridge like some of the 20 year locals but I would be happy to show you around

I've only been out here for two years, but I've held a Bridger pass during that time. It's becoming a lot more popular, can get skied out pretty fast with its proximity to Bozeman. The price of passes went up a bit this year, but that was expected as they compete with Big Sky. It's a pretty fun mountain. Majority of it is left natural, meaning there are lots of moguls to be found, pillow lines, and plenty of things to tranny. The ridge is the most appealing part of the mountain imo. Super friendly mountian, families and college students can ev found there on weekends, or even taking a college class in skiing. It tends to get more snow than Big Sky, as the Bridger Effect is a real thing.
Bridger is pretty tight.

There actually isn't anything inbounds in Idaho that's all that great. The BC is sick, but the lift served leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Really? It sounded like you were making a statement (aka placing blame) about Bridger Bowl's business practices which sounds like you're backing up this complete and utter douche bag. No where is it written that you cannot ride up the lifts with shit-covered pants but its reasonable to think its not allowed.

At least in this case, it was stated everywhere else but the ticket window of what the requirements are of riding this lift.

I have not heard for sure whether or not BB refunded him, but I'm almost positive the didn't. Mostly because his ridiculous tirade was going on at 3pm, an hour before they close. And the lift he was bitching about closes at 2:30 if I'm not mistaken.

Because Americans tend to have this attitude that if you as a business don't treat adults like infants by holding their hands through everything that requires a sliver of research or independent thought, then its your fault. Its not theirs for blindly going to a resort, going straight to the ticket window and purchasing a lift ticket without bothering to even look at a trail map or the resort's website... even though its common knowledge that most west coast resorts have terrain that you shouldn't/cannot access without a beacon.

ElGato's responses only reinforces this zero personal accountability idea and is a reason why you see so many warning signs on everything and everywhere. Its pathetic and unnecessary. No wonder America is such a joke to the rest of the world.

Actually that one was legit. The lawsuit wasn't over her spilling her coffee, it was over the fact that the coffee was so hot she suffered serious burns from it. Her skin practically melted.

yeah she spilled it, but the coffee was insanely hot for logistical reasons on mcd's behalf and burned the HELL out of her (look up her injuries it's brutal, 3rd degree burns all over her lower half/crotch, tons of skin grafts necessary, permanent disfigurement).

she sued for ~20,000, to cover her medical expenses plus anticipated ones/loss of income, and mcd's offered $800. she lawyered up, tried a bunch of mediations and settlements which mcd's ignored or refused, and then they went to trial, where they found her 20% responsible and mcd's 80%, and awarded her like 200k in compensatory and 2 or 3 mil in punitive, but that latter number went way down afterward thru a settlement (don't know the details of that one, and the actual amount was never diclosed)

that's just from memory and there are obv lots more details involved but i hope that answers your question

i just hate that people parrot that like it was the typical american sue happy culture at work. she asked for a reasonable amount, mcd's said no, and they got spanked in court

Yeah I'm pretty sure she wasn't driving either. I vaguely remember some documentary about all the BS and misinformation surrounding that lawsuit. I think McDonalds lawyers tried to smear her or something.
