Is the African American community going through a revolution in winter sports???

Last year, I only saw 2 black people on the slopes throughout the whole season. You can say they were a rare sight at my resort. But in the last 3 days I've seen around 7-10 of 'dem. I feel like i might be overreacting but they might completely takeover the slopes by the next season. Are you guys feeling this sudden change at your resorts or is it just me?





Disclaimer: I do not feel hate or hostility toward african americans. I just feel very surprised by recent outcomes at my resort.

My hill is 3 hrs from Baltimore and DC, we get lots of blacks. Generally they come up as a group maybe 8-15 deep. They are good for some of the funniest gaper shit possible. It's like cats and water.

Would love to see more diversity at the resorts. Not likely to happen while this sport continues to cost around 100$ a day in most situations

I think you may see more black ppl coming to ski resorts as gapers, but this sport is not ingrained in their cultural psyche whatsoever, so it will essentially always be a white mans game

Yeah, this post is dumber than shit, but it's not racist.

There's a black monoskier at Big Sky, he tipped me $5 when I was driving the gaper train. I still have the $5, because I figure there aren't many (any?) people who can say they got $5 from a black monoskier.

too touch up on OPs point, I think skiing/snowboarding are becoming more and more affordable and accessible to all walks of life, especially minority groups. I know my home mtn offers lesson programs for low-income children, which I think is super fucking awesome. Getting everyone stoked on snow is always a great thing, and should be accepted with open arms.

The % of African Americans with the disposable income to ski is extremely small. Sure there are plenty of African American families that can support a ski trip to Keystone, but they are an extremely small minority

I don't think so. The guy I saw didn't have a monoski like that haha, and I think he was a little bit older than that guy. I don't remember for sure though. Last time 8 saw him was last season.

I saw like 2 in the 50 day season last year i had last year so .04 ppl per day on average. but this year i saw about 9 in 3 days so 3 ppl per day.... honesty if this increase continues (75x more black ppl this year) possibly the whole state of az (where i ski) will be black in a few years.

but somehow i must be making mistakes in my math somewhere......

Haha this is funny. I actually did notice that theres like 5 new groms at my mountain, one of them rips, the others not so much. Whenever I see a new skier though i always try to direct him out of the park to learn the basics first, i absolutely hate when kids learn to ride in the park.

Agreed. Really bothers me but ultimately its not my problem since I know I can rip outside of the park. The classic is the kid who can throw a decent park run down, think they are the shit and run the show on the mountain, yet cant make a turn if their life depended on it. Love watching people like that

My mountain it becomes a problem very quickly considering theres 5 trails and its hard to avoid those kids haha

He's right though. The median income for whites is over 40% higher than that of blacks (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0104552.html). There are a variety of reasons behind this (structural racism, educational opportunites, etc.), but ultimately blacks are in general less able to afford the expense of a skiing vacation.

This isn't false, but there are more than enough wealthy black people to have a presence in winter sports.

A bigger reason is location. There aren't nearly as many black people who live close to ski mountains as there are those who live close to or in cities.

I have had quite a few black people in beginner lessons. There are a lot that come out to learn but it's not often you meet a black skier who's big into it with their own gear and everything.
