How Much Does Skiing REALLY Cost?

I recently screwed my skis over really bad, to the point that my local ski shop doesnt know what to do with them. Stuck in this position with a solid few days of skiing coming up I bought a new pair. I was thinking about exactly how many times I actually skied on my old ones, and I came up with just about a season. Which, for me, is just about 40 days. Thats when I started to think about how much per day I spent on them. And before you know it I had this list.



The average price of skiing based on a 40 day season (at least for me as different people spend different amounts). It was quite surprising to me how much you REALLY spend, and I thought I would share it, though doesnt really set me back at all.

I would just never spend 600 bucks on skis. Hold out 3 months and pay 375 in a lot of cases. I mean maybe if I was flushed with cash and wanted some skis badly. But hell no on park skis. Park skis are like skateboards IMO. Buy decent gear but don't pay alot it is only going to get beat to fuck anyway. My buddy back in the day skied a whole year on Fujatives that had literally no edge in one ski. When you have super nice gear and that guy is lapping you its time to re-evaluate your life.

Same i really care less about having the newst years model but would rather get quality for my money

I got the amount of days my gear tends to last. Im lucky if my poles last a year, usually by the end they are all bent to shit. and my past 2 skis have lasted me right around 40 days. Just depends how much damage you tend to put on your gear every day.

It's kinda sad that this sport that we love is so expensive. Imagine how insane it would be if anyone could pick up skiing like soccer or basketball...

22 days so far this season at PC/Canyons, so a little over $60 a day at this point. I live 5 minutes from the ski areas so I don't factor in driving.

Not too bad. You don't want to see how much I spend on kiteboarding...

For downhill equipment over the past 8 years:

-Pair of dynastars with look pivots, urban condition but still used em on the hill, 100

-Seth pistols, good condition, mounted once, 100

-AR5s, good condition, a case of beer

-FKS course, good condition, free from someone who bought skis with em and just wanted the skis

-FKS 180, good condition, 165

-2 jackets, 1 pair snow pants, 150

-2 helmets, 1 new 1 used good condition, 110

-goggles, something Oakley, 20

-poles, maybe 5, used from Salvation Army or free from bins at mountain

-Boots, used, 40

-Been gifted goggles, various gloves, neck warmers etc.

Total equipment cost for nearly a decade: 750 ish. Plus lift tickets, plus Tele stuff totalling 500ish


Gotta search for the deals and not care about using 10 year old skis or jackets so long as they work.

It may cost a lot of money, but it's totally worth it.

Being able to fly across the surface of snow on fiberglass/wooden planks is priceless

I gotcha, I wasn't reading into it and thought that was just for gas prices…not total cost of ownership. Regardless, a little cheaper now with the falling gas prices

This season:

Smith Maze =90
2 beanies =20
Saga anomie 3L =90
Armada Pants =90
Race skis and bindings =450
Finally got a tuning vice =150
Diamond stones and bevel =100
Gloves+socks =100
Composite poles =50
Pass =300
Clear lens for night =45


But, most of this gear will last because I treat my stuff really well. So next season I'll have to buy like a pass, wax, maybe new pants and a stone grind at the shop.

In average, I spend 25$ a day for my equipment and my season pass. In my opinion it's not that much but it's really the transport that cost a lot of money. For me, about 70% of the cost of skiing is due to transportation.

For me I spent
Ski Pass 1550
Hojis 220
Cochise 480
Gas 1000
Jacket 200
Ski boots 150
Bindings 400

Thats A clean 4grand and Will probably spend a bit more then that. Honestly I could go cheaper and be thrifty but I enjoy having fun toys and I still don't work at all from mid december until the end of may so Life isn't so bad. Also I ski Over a hundred days a year so it works out to be under 40/day.

I'm basing this off of what I rode/ wore today and if I were to use everything for a 50 day season.

Pants: $170
Under Armor: $50
Ski the East Tall T: $20
Saga Jacket: $220
Beanie - free
Level 1 Hoodie: $40
Goggles: $150
Helmet: $100
Gloves: $45

Skis(2012/2013 K2 Empress): $150
Boots(2015 Mary Janes): $350
Bindings(Rossi Axium): $125
Pass: $155

I either drive 180 miles, 90 miles, or 35 miles to ski(round trip), with a jeep that gets about 19 mpg in ny state where gas is about $3.00/gallon.
I calculated a weighted average to be 14 dollars on gas per day.





My total comes out to be: $45.5/ day.
Currently reevaluating my spending habits on ski stuff. Thanks, OP.

Buy used clamps and you can get fks 185s in great condition for $150...

Super pass, Lake louise kicking horse, fernie, kimberly Naskiska. Its no epic pass deal like down in dat US of A but its got three sick hills that I'll ski a enough to make it worth it.

I spend my money the way I want to spend my money. I make it... I will do whatever I want with it. That said, I'm not collecting food stamps because I spent all my money on skiing stuff. The point of this thread is to show people how much this sport really costs, as it is hard to keep track of (mostly because not many people buy 100% of their equipment at one time.) I think you mis interpreted it.

But, if you did understand it the first time you read this thread and you still are having the same view point, then share some constructive criticism instead of, what I think is pouting, and calling me an idiot. That isn't helping very much at all.
