I did the exact same thing a few years ago. I lost both my big toenails. If it's painful to the touch (and the tissue is still damaged) I would stay out of a ski boot, because cold and lack of circulation are not gonna help your recovery.

Once that's all better, though (even if your toes still look weird and your toenails are in the process of popping off, I think you're good to go. I certainly skied, anyway. What I did was pretty gross but it worked for me. I taped up my toes so that my toenail would stay in place. I left my toenail on even after it officially popped off, because the skin underneath is super sensitive and I wanted to reinforce it for skiing. It worked for me, though, and when I got rid of them my new ones had grown in about sixty percent.

I also skied in those boot glove things for a long time, because once you get frostbite it's easier to get it again. I put thermal tape around the outside of my boot liners, too. If you don't have a footbed (and you have an arch in your foot), get one - it'll do wonders for your circulation.

Bottom line - if it was ski boot induced frostbite, take a little time to heal. Keeping the toenail on is gross but helpful. Make small boot modifications to help with warmth and circulation and prevent this from happening again.

Lol I don't blame you, it sounds ridiculous, but it worked. Not gonna lie, it was a lil weird.

Years ago I got frostbite in my big toes and it sucks. My story is a silly one. We had a lot of snow fall followed by an arctic high it was really cold but the snow stayed light and fluffy. I didn't have a car at the time so j was hitching everywhere. Well - my shoes at the time had holes in the soles by the big toes and when walking to the hitching post to go skiing my socks would get wet. Being a young idiot I didn't switch my wet cotton socks for dry ones, but instead just put the wet socks/feet in my ski boots and went skiing all day. This went on for a week before I finally clued in that I was killing my toes.

Now I have annual frostbite issues with my big toes and one of my biggest fears in life is that I will one day lose my big toes as I get older and my circulation gets worse. I AM a cigarette smoker and a heavy drinker so I'm not doing my blood circulation any favours but such is life


Anyways - once you get frostbite it's very, very easy to get it again. From here on out you need to pay attention to your feet and listen to them. The really hard part is when it gets cold out. It's way to easy to go out on a cold day and just let your toes freeze while your out skiing. Undo this sometimes because the skiing is just that good. I'll go out, knowingly let my toes freeze and my brain is alright with it because I am, at the time, having a blast - knowing very well that I am giving myself frostbite, and when I get inside at the end of the day and they start to thaw it is going to hurt in a serious way. Thawing frostbite might be theist painful thing I have ever felt.

Such is the life of a dumb, stubborn skier.

I have a problem with frosbite in my thumb. I went too hard one day and didn't want to take a break. Now it comes back when the temp gets in the negatives. Just take it easy you won't regret it.

SAME thing happened with me last year, lol. I used superglue tho. Put a little on the sides of my toenail. My toes still get slightly purple/blueish black (just spots) when I ski.

But yeah, I didn't take time off - but it was prolly stupid. I would rest up until you feel better.

I went skiing #yolo and I was fine. I used the little footwarmer things. and they helped very much.
