Why I want to leave the midwest

You can't hit a rail? Gaper.
You don't wear a cotton hoodie? Gaper.
You wear a nice Patagonia jacket? Gaper.
You are really good at everything except park? Gaper.

I feel like people here in Wisconsin don't understand the whole "freeskiing" thing. These kids look down on me like I'm nothing. If you can ski park good, you are considered a good skier. If you can shred pow, huck cliffs, do moguls, and carve...Nobody really cares. I would fit right in at most Western resorts. I don't let this stuff get to my head, but I want to see if anybody else agrees.

1st off, Wisconsin definitely gets the "whole freeskiing thing". Granite peak, Troll, and Cannonsberg(sp?) all kill it in terms of park and cater very well to freestyle terrain. If people are looking down on you, maybe you need some new friends to shred with that will be more positive.

Secondly, pow in the midwest isn't exactly a thing unless you ever go to Mt. Bohemia soooo yea.

All mountain skiing in the midwest is a joke compared to out West anyways. As said on the previous page, if you go out west, you probably will find out that the vast majority of locals can out ski you anywhere, anytime, and probably hungover as shit. Not to be discouraging but that's the reality of the matter.

Anyways, no need to complain about your situation. Skiing at GP is better than many resorts around the midwest by far. Just be grateful you have a dope as fuck hill to ski at.

I go to Bohemia quite a bit.I know my abilities. I never said I was better than everybody out west. I'm just stoked to move out there someday and learn how to improve my skiing.

Just.Go.With.ItI honestly feel it would be best to ditch the park thing all together. Who honestly drives 2+ hours north of Spirit (Which has an awesome park) to go and ski something that is offered all around the state? Lutsen is unique because it has terrain that is honestly hard to find in MN and it is absolutely huge in midwest standards. They should work to improve their infrastructure such as replacing that god awfully slow lift from the base to the top of Eagle instead of wasting money on a half ass park that no one even uses.


That does make a lot of sense. Lutsen seems to target the "family vacation" demographic, which is great because the hill is awesome for learning how to ski and has plenty of runs to explore. However, as someone who lives 1.5 hours north of Lutsen in Canada, I do somewhat wish that Lutsen would've improved their park and become a little more like other hills a little further south (Spirit, Troll, etc.). Hills in northern Ontario have yet to really get on board with the whole terrain park thing, so it would be nice to have some decent park close by. Then again, like you said, whats the point when you can just drive a few more hours and hit the duluth/twin cities. There certainly can't be much incentive for Lutsen to dump money on their park, as it's pretty tough to compete with what some of the more established parks a little further south are doing.

Ive grown up skiing alpine and wilmot and basically no where else. If you think everyone thinks that they are hot shit then I disagree. It seems to me like alot of people are just trying to have fun, and I love hot lapping here in the midwest, because you can basically get most of the run to yourself. I was hitting alpine's park all night on New Year's eve and I basically had it all to myself once my friends left. Aside from the fact that the park wasn't up to par, I thought it was fucking great.

The cat who ran Lutsens park back in 2010 went back out east, to okemoe I think. And dont get all in a dither about Lutsen expansion plans either, they havent even done any preliminary permit work yet.

Thats BS, you just dont know where to look. I get 40+ Days in at Lutsen and ski the trees almost exclusivly as soon as theres coverage. Freshies stay fresh when its subzero out.

the hell are you talking about? sure the midwest doesn't have any vert or many pow days but there are plenty of cliffs to hit at some places. First one is me dropping a two on 3" of man made snow. second is some guy dropping a huge midwest cliff with a ton of pow. Both at the one and only Giants Ridge.

When I moved to the midwest as a 15 year old kid, 10 years ago the idea of a professional freeskier coming out of the midwest was a joke, everyone either left for ski academy of moved out west to make it big. Fast forward 10 years later and kids from the midwest are winning USASA nationals and dudes like Nick Goepper from Cincinnati are winning olympic gold medals.

If you want to leave the midwest do it, everyone does at some point, moving to Utah was the best experience of my life, and I became a way better all around skier because of it.

Most hills in the midwest are the same. As long as you have fun and are fun to be around you'll fit right in.

The vibes at minnesota hills and trollhaugen have always seemed pretty good to me, especially among the freeskiing community. Of course because skiing is largely a sport for wealthy people you will get those types of obnoxious kids, but find your niche in the midwest scene and you'll hardly notice. It really is a tight knit community out on the hill. Also just wanted to point out that lutsens real vertical is 765', not the 1000+ that they advertise. Still some good skiing to be found there. Haven't made it out to bohemia yet but that seems to be the only skiing comparable to out west in terms of difficulty and snow conditions, and also has a bigger vertical drop than lutsen. Also besides bohemia nothing in the midwest is even comparable to the big areas out east like killington, sunday river, and jay peak, and bohemia doesn't compare to these areas in vertical drop or resort experience.

here's a showcasing of their best features such as the majestic up-flat. and the step down to nowhere.



i feel the struggle but whoever builds this park is probably a group of drunk ass snowboarders going for the whole "tehn9ne" tranny find your ass off thing. looks fun.
