How should I spend my money for skiing?

Need help on choosing how to spend my money for next winter in the southern hemisphere. Last season I bought shitty boots that have been an absolute nightmare to deal with so I'm giving up on trying to make them comfortable and just going to go all out and buy new boots. Also I have a massive trip planned to go ski touring around the highest mountains in the land of Oz but if a bought the whole touring setup (e.g. Skis, bindings, skins, pack, shovel etc.) I wouldn't have enough money for the boots.

Tough choice. Skinning out to blue Lake off Charlotte's is beautiful. Such good terrain for Australia. However, I'd go with new boots. Wait til you're more expieranced skier. And a bit older. If you fuck up at blue then you're a good two hours from medical aidand four away from Cooma hospital.

Also, there's a bunch of skiers who skin out to blue Lake. Ask them about it. Mainly Simon Blondel or the flying muzz. Maybe even pimp hands if you see him around.

Rock and a hard place.

Try looking into things used, that'll save you a ton. As bad as used gear sounds its usually pretty solid. I just picked up a pair of Dukes for $100 the other day.


I could be wrong about prices because you are from what I assume to be Australia

Boots first for sure. They're not going to cost you $1000, prices here are bad but not that bad. Keep an eye out on ebay for touring gear, I got a set of skis mounted with dukes a few seasons ago for $250.

Get boots that fit really well. Make sure you invest in custom footbeds because without them your boot will never truly fit properly and perform to it's full potential.

What's the point of having super nice skis, bindings, etc if you can't enjoy them because you're in pain?

I got last year's full tilts for $225 from a shop with a free oven sesh. Don't need to spend $1000 on them if you buy at the right time

Ouch, I got a set of Nordica Patron pros last year in Melbourne for $650 including fitting and custom footbeds. Could pay to shop around for boots, $1000 seems excessive.

Not really. It's just fallen in value relative to the USD recently, 1 AUD is buying 0.81 USD now, not all that long ago we were nearly dollar for dollar.

Where in the fuck do you live because thats absurd. Drop kicks at the shop I work in go for $439 and we dont charge for fitting. Hell I'll spend 3 hours working with someone to get them fitted properly. Boot fitting is the single most important thing in skiing hands down and if your shop has to charge for boot fitting then they're cheap as fuck and probably not a place you want to spend your money at in the first place.

You're going to want a good pair of boots. $1200 is extremely steep for boots, im sure you can buy all the gear you need with $1200 boots and touring. Keep your ear to the ground for used gear

What the fuck are you buying all of this years newest gear at ski barn or something? for 800 you could get a killer touring setup and get fitted and molded for a pair of boots for around 400...

Pretty much yep. You get fucked over by the exchange rate. Then import taxes. Then supply and demand. Pretty much everything in Australia costs a fuckload.

If I was you OP I'd wait til coalition brands has a sale and go there. You can pick a season or two year old Full Tilts for cheapish. Plus look at other boots and older seasons.

Don't get full tilts unless you like replacing broken parts after only a year of use. Worst fucking decision I ever made was getting First Chairs, one toe buckle completely broken and all but 1 of the rest are no longer spring loaded to stay shut.
