A question for all - Is Alaska an Island?

I was listening to the radio this morning and they began talking about if Alaska was an island. Callers seemed pretty torn thinking both that Alaska is an island and that it is not.


Trying not to give the answer in the OP. Just answer the poll.

Some local radio show. Got a rental car and that was on. I know its not an island. But some people actually thought it was because the map of the US usually shows it by itself. I didnt think people were that dumb.

This gets into a semantics argument. Geographical island or cultural island? Geographically, Alaska is not surrounded water on all sides, so no, it is not an island. Governmentally, Alaska is part of the US, but culturally probably closer to northern British Columbia. I'd say Sarah Palin is probably most qualified to answer this question. She can see Russia from her wolf-hunting helicopter, after all!

I tnought it was an island until a few weeks ago when my geography teacher informed me that it was in fact attached to canada WHICH I always thought they did that on maps to save space.
