Serious Question

Why do girls get picked up by red bull doing 7's, while there are guys doing triples to get the same level of sponsorship?

Good question, has been asked many times before.

they're aren't many girl skiers to begin with, most have gone to snowboarding.

and even if they do ski, it's even rarer to see them going huge in the park

now for us guys, they're a lot of guy skiers and a lot of us in the park going semi to moderately huge

It's because they're at the top of their chosen sport. So they get sponsors. They're on top of the podium so more coverage for their sponsors. Quite simple really.

Probably going to get some shit for this, but as awful as it sounds, looks and physical attraction do also play a role when it comes to women's sports. Its the sad reality of the culture we live in to day.

I bet the dudes get more money from the same big time companies, mirroring the gender pay gap in the rest of the economy. So unless you can prove they're getting the same thing, I don't understand your argument.

Men are better than women at all winter sports, minus curling. Hell 95% of all sports and that's how it is. Saying that freeskiers or snowboarders don't work as hard as others is just false. Mogul skiers and ski racers do very similar things; go to the gym, go ski, do multiple contents a year etc. Just because they don't do the amount of "training" (which honestly for skiing is just going skiing which these athletes do every fucking day) as say a gymnast or sprinter etc doesn't mean they aren't working hard for the goal.


And let's be honest, skiers and snowboarders get attention for their medals but Olympians like figure skaters, gymnast, runners and swimmers etc get way more attention, so this makes your argument slightly flawed.

that's why I don't think slopestyle should be an olympic sport , it just isn't olympic enough , keep it in the xgames where they can drink smoke and party before during or after , not in the olympics where it takes a really serious and athletic turn.

I love the olympics , it's crazy to see all the athletes at the top of their form and the sheer athletic talent they have. Seeing slopestyle and especially Devin Logan there just doesn't make sense to me, they don't belong there

Two reasons.

1. Open your eyes and look around, how many female park skiers do you see? I don't see very many. To say there is 1 for every 10 guys would be a generous estimate. Of course the guys are going to be skiing at another level, because there simply is much more competition.

Maybe someone can pull some census data from NS and tell us what the ratio is on this site alone and give us some idea of what that number might actually be. I suspect the disparity is quite high.

2. Skiing takes a lot of strength and muscle. Guys have a huge natural advantage here due to higher levels of testosterone, which allows them to build and maintain more muscle mass. To expect a woman to be as strong as a guy is like expecting someone doping steroids to be equal in strength as your average Joe. (FYI the primary effect of steroids is increased production of testosterone).

Conclusion is a combination of both societal and physical differences.

Self promotion is more important than skill these days. That holds true up into a certain level of sponsorship. Typically if you're making redbull money, that means your one of the best skiers in the world.

my personal theory is that there is no one pushing women to progress as much as men. I know it not that they can't ski because I ski with plenty of girls who are way better than me at real skiing, but they just aren't pushed to be better at park.

think about it, if you could win x games and get all the sponsors you could ever want, with a safety grab possibly corked 7, why would you want to learn a double and risk getting hurt. whereas to be a pro male park skier you have to have a triple or two to be competitive.

Disclaimer: kelly sildaru has been killing it for a while now with no one but her brother pushing her. She is the future of womens freeskiing and could win xgames if she actually weighed enough to hit the jumps.

they get sponsored for basic tricks compared to mens skiing because they are a few years behind the men soon the women slopestlye will be where men are now

Kind of a generalization. The athletes getting the biggest sponsorship deals and exposure are very likely the most skilled athletes. Marketability plays a role to a certain extent, but skill is by and large the deciding factor. The fact that there are so many male skiers tossing doubles without sponsorship is purely a numbers/budget game.

We've all been getting stoked off candide, tanner, jp, just to name a few of our idles, we've been watching for a while now. I feel like the female presence in freeskiing is a new thing, and im excited! I see edits of young gals KILLING IT! Just picture where they will be in 2,5, and 10 years. There side of freeskiing is just so new

But there are also people getting decent sponsorships through webisodes/vlogs that aren't nearly to the level of most pro quality athletes. Traveling Circus has always been awesome, but those skiers wouldn't compete with competition athletes.

Oh no doubt, which is why I said "by and large". There are niche athletes that fit into a certain segment of skiing (the traveling circus guys, film oriented athletes, vlogs, backcountry-specific). Marketability is big. But elite-level talent garners elite-level sponsorship.

So, why do guy pros have a 3 to 5 year career span until they break themselves or they just can't hang anymore? Let me take a crack at answering. Ummmm because the guys are doing unsustainable tricks that punish the body even when they stomp at trick?

So why are the woman competing into their 30s? Hmmmmm well, maybe because they are performing at a sustainable level?

Females get sponsored if they know how to ski, are moderately attractive and can ride switch... a lot harder for guys because theres so much competition around

This topic always comes up and seriously, I don't understand how women aren't at closer to the same level as men.

First of all I don't understand how competition or people pushing you is the only way to progress. Personally most of my progression happens when I'm alone hot lapping the park, I'm not doing it to be better then anyone or to show off, I do it cause I want to get better at the sport I love and that's enough push for me. If women in free skiing truly love the sport they do and want to be better they should just sack up and progress not because a bunch of chicks are telling them too. and if they need that push just shred with someone better then you that person doesn't have to be a female it can be anyone.

Second of all the fact that girls have different body's and are "weaker" is bull shit. You don't need to be jacked to be good at freestyle skiing, the only thing you might need is good endurance and a bit of leg strength for those gnarly landings, but you don't have to be a full on body builder on steroids to throw a double cork, if anything that would hold you down.

And women in extreme sports are showing this everywhere, I mean look at Kelly Sildaru she's 12 years old and shreds harder than any women in freeskiing even better then the average guy and shes only 12, Tatum Monod throws dubs in the backcountry all the time and theres only say 10 noticeably good backcountry ladies for her competition, and look at snowboarding and skateboarding there's a crap load of chicks that rip it. And taking it back in the history books look at Fabiola da Silva a professional female inline skater who not only consistently got first in women's events but ranked high in men's events as well. I think you missed some key aspects of what competition means. Competition isn't only that there are other people around you pushing you, which is definitely still a factor. It also means that there is a bigger population pool to find people with natural talent in. A group of 1000 skiers is more likely to have an Einstein of skiing versus a pool of 10.

Another point of competition is what someone else touched on. Skiing is dangerous, if you don't need to risk life and limb throwing triples to win, why would you? You would probably focus more on style and having fun, rather than ever increasingly risky tricks.

Powder skiing is a different beast all together because messing up a double in pow is not nearly the same risk as missing a double on an icy groomer.

Strength is a huge factor for several reasons. My skis, bindings, and boots weigh a little over 20lbs altogether. On a small framed 100lb woman this is a huge percentage of body weight you are expecting her to be able to throw around easily. A much higher percentage then a 175lb male. This means a girl going to the park for the first time is going to find it much more difficult and inaccessible then a guy going for the first time, who can sometimes muscle their way through bad landings etc. Women are also much more likely to sustain knee injuries because of wider hips, which puts women in a more knock kneed stance, and puts more strain on knee ligaments.

Lastly Kelly Sidaru is proof of how much of skiing has been a good ol boys club historically. And how when we give little girls the opportunity to succeed in a male dominated sport they can surprise us. Boys have a longer history of being trained and indoctrinated into a particular sport at an early age. Manufactured athletes, where parents spend countless dollars and hours on their children from before they can even speak to be good at a particular sport, has historically been done to male children, since men dominate the sports world. This is recently changing. Kelly Sidaru is evidence of that.

I feel like that is mostly because women generally weigh less in gymnastics. Gymnastics doesn't punish lighter women as much like it does in skiing. If you have trouble hitting a large jump with enough speed, why would you try larger tricks?

They don't directly compete so it's hard to say precisely. You can read http://www.livestrong.com/article/547950-what-is-difference-between-mens-gymnastics-and-womens-gymnastics/ about the differences. Women's gymnastics focuses more on art and dance, whereas men's gymnastic focus is more on strength and they don't use music.

I feel like we've been beating this subject to death lately.

Not that many skier girls. Therefore standards for girls to get sponsorships are on the lower side compared to guys. Plus companies need to get more girl skier sponsors so that they can attract more girls to skiing so that girls buy their stuff. I actually talked about that in marketing class the other day.

But can guys not undermine female skiers anymore. It's a big deal what they're doing for girls in the sport and its really lame to talk about it like it's not.

I some what agree with most of your points.

But it doesn't matter about the pool of 10 vs. the pool of 1,000, what matters is that there are excellent female skiers out there or einsteins as you would say, that are killing it, but I just feel they have so much more potential then what they're showing. And yeah this sport is dangerous, but what keeps competition alive is progression, if there's no progression there's no competition. and if your not willing to do some new tricks or at least show a little more style then competition isn't for you and you should probably go film and just have fun and work on your style like Maude Raymond has been doing. And doing new tricks doesn't necessarily mean a double or triples if girls started throwing better rails tricks, different grabs that involve more flexibility, which women have on guys, or just getting creative on the course that would be enough for me.

And yeah your right women are more subseptable to injury, but all that means is to stop trying new tricks on 60ft jumps and maybe get them down on a nice small 40 footer first and maybe just being smarter about the risks you take. and i think the biggest reason girls get injured is because they always feel pressured to hit the big jumps but personally i would rather see a smooth 9 over a small booter then a super sketchy 9 over a massive jump.

And kelly sildaru is also proof that weight or strength doesn't matter, it's all about determination, practice and not caring about what others think. Just get out there and try your best!

But I do agree skiing is probably a little harder for the female side of things but that's no excuse in my opinion. If you want to succeed or progress in something nothing should be able to stop you
