If thats your home mtn you might not want to laugh tok much. Thats bad news mid season. Also a pretty big one. There was a small one when i worked at west years ago and it made this sweet ice volcano

happened at tog a couple years back. right near the top of the lift, we were hiking a box a hundred yards down or so and BOOM.

shit was going like 60ft in the air. it was an ice rink near there for a little while.

Nah, water mains crack, they don't explode. The water pressure could toss someone quite a ways though.

even when they're under the pressure that they are at ski areas? like almost 1000 PSI in some cases?

It's probably about 1/10th of that. 1000 psi would be totally unnecessary.

There are some guns that can handle up to 1000 psi but the ideal pressure for most fan guns is generally around 475. In some cases you could see very high psi at the lower end of a line if the water is traveling from the top of the mountain. but yeah, 1000 psi is over kill

Ouch.

If it's someplace their excavators can get to quickly, they will be in good shape though. Digging that will be half the battle being frozen and in need of a whole new pipe section. A good metal guy can have that cut out and get a new section welded back in two days or so though. Depends how much is bad, how hard to manipulate the pipe, etc.

I do not envy the guy laying in that hole though. I've been there. It's cold and it's wet and it sucks.

I thought they had that near the bottom of the hill. I forgot what the pressure loss is / 1k feet. Semantics anyway.

The good news is that the break will only postpone snowmaking on that slope only. The rest of the mountain is fine.
