The Good and the Bad of Being a Girl Park Skier

me: "next drop".. Dude looks right at me and continues to snake me..

Sometimes since it isn't as common for us girls to be in the park than it is for the guys, I think they forget that maybe we can actually hit those features too.. I'm definitely not saying all of them. But there are always those few who snake you, no matter if you call drop or not. Hello? what happened to ladies first?

For the most part though, I think we get a lot of respect. And I find that being around the guys brings out the competitive drive in me and pushes me to the next level that I need to be on. Not to mention its kind of cool doing something so bad ass . I mean, come on. Us girl skiers are pretty bad ass.

YES. Ive had the snake problem too.The skiers are pretty chill and respectuful and its mostly the snowboarders.. Ive almost been taken out so many times this season already by dirtbag snowboarders. Its pretty shitty

There is no bad to being a girl skier. Just suck it up, be pushy, be loud, don't give a shit about what anyone else is doing and rock it. Don't be a push over in the park, if you're gonna drop then drop in, don't wait. There are always going to be people who snake you no matter what you do.

I've found to be a girl park skier, you kind of need to be like the guys. What I mean is you need to be as aggressive to drop as they are and you need to be forward.

Im not saying you or anyone here does this. But girls who are like all silly and try to get attention in that way will not be respected in park.(at least that's what I think from my experience)

I couldn't agree with you more. haha I'm not one who lets people snake me, I'm usually aggressive. But sometimes you can't stop em. And I totally agree, girls who try to get attention in the park and focus on guys rather than skiing, shouldn't get respect.

generally, I've found that skiers are pretty respectful, but ive had to mouth off to a few royal douchefuckers who were trying to tell me that i shouldn't drop because "ill hurt myself"

it definitely sucks but its always going to be a factor just because we're girls, and we "cant ski" according to most people.

Just be aggressive, take no bullshit, and show everyone that you know your park etiquette and that you deserve as much respect as everyone else on the mountain.

I want as little attention paid to me in the park as possible. It's intimidating enough without feeling like people are starting at you! I've gotten both sides of the spectrum, guys being super rude and demeaning and other guys tapping poles for me when I rode by. For those dudes, respect, I'm not the best but at least someone acknowledged my effort.



Does anyone else hate the phrase " Woah, you're wayy better than I thought you would be"? I mean come one, no shit I'm " wayy better" I'm probably way better than you on most of the mountain, but that comment can be kept to yourself. To me, it's super back-handed.

I kind of love that. In my head, I'm the underdog all the time. So when someone says that to me, it's like fuck yeah, I proved you wrong. I definitely do see your side and agree but at the same time, it's like you opened their eyes a bit. To me that means a lot because they realized they were wrong in a sense and maybe next time they won't be so quick to underestimate/ judge a girl skier

haha yes. I feel like there's a lot of guys that give us respect more so than not. And it does feel good to gain that respect for sure

You ladies are right. I get worked up about shit like that haha, and I was thinking about one time in particular when this guy was super condescending towards me. I down for complements! Don't get me wrong.

I know exactly what you mean. In a way it's a bit offensive that guys get so surprised but at the same time it's cool to prove them wrong haha

same!!!! i always feel really nervous when riding with my guy friends that throw down. something I definitely need to work on this season....

I get a little too aggressive sometimes. I may or may not have been snaked by a skier and ran over his tails on my board. We both ate shit but it was worth it.

I don't like attention in the park, positive or negative, solely for the fact I'm a girl. Especially with my recent change from skiing to riding, I'm still learning and I don't want to let my park sisters down. I feel like we have so much to prove and it's terrifying thinking about that while I'm riding. I'm much more comfortable in my backyard set up for that reason alone.

I have the same problem. I tend to drop in when everyone else is just standing there wondering who is going next. Im not very loud so that doesn't help at all.

Skiing and boarding is all about having fun! I feel like we all seem to be a little competitive. I think its a lot of our nature! but I think we all need more confidence and not to care if someone is watching. Because half of the guys in the park just sit and watch and can't do anything themselves. And a the vast majority of guys are also trying new things and are maybe wiping out just as much as us (maybe you guys don't but I know I wipeout a good bit!). It's part of learning! That's what I'm going to focus on this season. Definitely confidence and to not care who's watching because by the end of the season they'll be shocked by how much I've improved. haha Gotta risk it for the biscuit!

My main response to this thread is that it depends where you go.

What part of the country you're in, what region in that part of the country you're in, and then what resort in that region of that part of the country you're in. Traveling around and bit and hearing stories from different girls gives you a good idea at how different the female park skiing experience is for everyone. I was born in the west but spent most of my life in the midwest. In Michigan, I've found that because the parks are so much smaller everyone is more competitive. And young kids and females are the first to get shoved out of the way, or intimidated into leaving.

When I was younger (10-13ish) I basically was booed into leaving the park, because it wasn't "my territory." A lot of us seem to find a group to become apart of, so if someone disrespects us then we got backup. But I've always longed for that group to be an all-female-skiers group.

I feel I would've entered, stayed, and progressed in the park a lot sooner/faster had I known other girls would be there, and willing to back me up.

But then you go other places and everyone is really friendly and supportive, and they want to make sure you have the same experience they do.

This is the moment when I sigh, and think maybe one day it'll get better everywhere.

Another big dream of mine would be for a group of female park skiers to start a blog/forum site just for other female skiers (beginners and beyond). That way I could get some practical advice of girls who've been there and done that. And I could feel more confident about being in the park and progressing.

people either underestimate you giving you the chance to blow their minds OR they give you mad respect.

take advantage of that double standard, and if you are truly there to just shred and have fun and not focus on being a girl then everyone else will focus on how much fun youre having too.

just start snaking everyone like a force to be reckoned with. even if you bail, I think the occasional snake earns you respect. plus then you wont really mind when people snake you back. also its like an extra 5 seconds you have to wait to hit a feature. Not so bad. maybe you will get some inspiration in that time, or watch someone eat shit. its win win really

trutthh haha i've told random people behind me at breck, "fair warning im trying new shit and could explode - might wanna give me a few seconds" usually don't get any problems. but there was one jerkoff who dropped in at the exact same time anyway and i think he was expecting me to stop. obviously wasn't going to do that so we hit all three jumps next to each other
