That's because it is man, can you imagine trying to make it through a cat track or lift line with that much dead weight attached to your feet? I imagine skinning would be a bitch on a snowboard as well, you'd probably blow your knee before you got anywhere.

On a more serious note, rails on snowboards seem like they would be terrifying.

Here's how it probably works for the kids at your school. They go up to the mountain once a year, try snowboarding thinking they will be the next Shaun White, and then they suck at it. And then they tell everyone at the lunch table that skiing is inferior, yet they would probably suck at skiing as well.

In all honesty, learning how to ski is realistically easier than learning to snowboard. People are generally more comfortable with their legs apart than strapped together. It's also much easier to balance and turn on skis since you have 4 edges than snowboarding with 2. This also comes from personal experience since I can ski pretty well but I suck at snowboarding and can't do a toe side turn to save my life.

What's the difference between a beginner snowboarder and a snowboard instructor? About 3 days.

Seriously though - if you have zero experience with ski/snowboard, inline, or any kind of board sport skiing is easier to get to the level where you can simply make it down a groomer and initiate turns somewhat correctly. After that though the learning curve for skiing gets a lot harder than snowboarding.

In the end though, the only useful application of this knowledge is if you're getting someone new (especially little kids) into the sport(s). Anyone who ties to say one way or the other as bragging rights or to dis the other sport is an insecure teenager who is trying to puff up their own ego by putting people who are different than them down. You know, you're usual teenage angst bullshit.



A saying I came up with a few years ago that I like to...say... is: "A snowboard is a really fun toy and a pair of skis are a really good tool."
Both are great and have their own advantages/disadvantages and you'd be a fool to completely discredit and brush off one or the other.

Experience with Keystone Ski School...

Skiing~ Easier to get on your feet and start snowplowing down the mountain, harder to master all of the skills necessary to become an advanced all around skier.

Snowboarding~ Harder to get going at first, once you are up skill progression happens more rapidly.

this actually implies that its easier for a skier to do one because its been done. Since a snowboarder hasn't done one it implies its harder to do.

Gapers =/= all snowboarders. Some mountains believe in cutting uphill trails in downhill skiing which is dumb but other than that it's not bad.

In the same way that most people who ski never come close to mastering it it's the same with snowboarding. It's easier to get there but it doesn't happen.

I've seen more bad skiers in the park than snowboarder though. Could just be location but there definitely are some kids who learn to hit park but never learn how to do proper turns. Definitely dig the programs that start kids off with a year of racing or a mix of racing and freestyle.

I think snowboarding is probably easier to pick up on your own. Depending on how often you do it. Skiing it's easier to develop bad habits and kind of always ski shitty no matter how much you go out.

You clearly need to to find better friends. All the snowboards I ride with are strong riders. They can throw down super technical lines, and are rarely behind me.

I think its fucked up how people are so adamant that they are distinctly different sports. They are probably the most closely related sports in the world. Like non identical twins ... but..the snowboarder is the ugly one.

I stopped snowboarding sophomore year of HS... Skiing park was way easier to learn than snowboarding in the park. They're both difficult in their own ways. Don't know why there's so much hate between the 2 sports, it must just be the gapers/tools of each sport shitting on one another.

If you know how to ski, and you try to snowboard it's really hard to learn,cause its so different to skiing but if you start off snowboarding it would be way easier to learn

Ignorance, narrow-mindedness, and I think age plays a big factor in it, as well. Lots of skier kids think boarding is gay, and lots of boarders think skiing is gay. Its that stage in life where anything you do is the shit, and anyone doing something different is a loser/nerd/faggot/whatever.

I feel like as you age, you become more open to new ideas and things. and you will realize how dumb it is to hate someone over such trivial, petty, and high-school like bullshit.

I started skiing when I was in pre-school, switched to snowboarding around age 8, and have been snowboarding since. I bought a pair of skis a bit over a year ago and now do both.

I'd say skiing is probably easier. Falling is a lot more awkward on skis and often hurts more, but it is also much much easier to fall on a snowboard.

I'm not sure which I think is more difficult for jumps, but snowboarding is without a doubt harder for rails in my opinion. Being able to lock onto a rail (gripping it by tilting skis opposite ways) makes rails on skis much easier. It also make spinning off or doing swaps much easier.

I enjoy both though and you likely won't care what is easier or harder or any of that stupid shit in five years.

Snowboarding in the park is easier if you ask me. I've been skateboarding forever, which probably helps. A snowboard is bigger and attached, so it's like skateboarding but easier. Flat ground or spins off little jumps are so easy, but it's super hard to fs 360 a gap on a skateboard.

I found it harder to turn properly though, because being attached to it drove me crazy. I'm used to skateboards and surfboards and being able to shuffle around. But that was years ago. I bet I could do it fine now. Skiing is definitely easier if you're just cruising groomers. Moguls seem to suck on snowboards though.

Sounds like your friends suck at snowboarding.

The only thing my snowboard friends ever complain about is long traverses. It's understandable though, traverses would suck on a snowboard. StaYing on that one edge the while way would be hard. Plus if some gaper stops in front of them they're pretty much screwed and have to drop in where they are.

Of course it's easier to spin off a little jump because it's attached to you. You're comparing it wrong though.

When was the last time a skater through a triple cork?(on a skateboard)

It really depends on the trick, the person, and their prior experience.

I learned how to ski when I was 3 so I don't remember how hard or easy it was. But I did learn how to snowboard a couple years ago and it took a while, probably longer than it would have taken to learn how to ski at that age. So id say it's easier to learn the basics of skiing.

However, riding park on a snowboard is much easier to learn. When I learned park on a board it took me about a week to figure out 50-50s and back boards on most features. When I learned park on skis it took a bit longer for that. So I'd definitely say skiing is harder when learning park.
