Lucky break for slopestyle women

So it looks like Kelly Sildaru won't be competing in Dew tour slope. from her Facebook page:

"Due to my low weight I´m not having enough speed for the second jump. Even straight air tend to be a little short. So, I will not be competing at this year´s Dew Tour. Still I have a chance to practise and hang out with my friends."

Feels like a real shame to me, it would have been a welcome boost of progression in women's skiing when she won.

Tough to fly halfway across the globe to bow out, but I'm not sure she had much to be gained by competing and risking coming up short and the prospect of an injury. You gotta respect the maturity in the decision. I'm sure she wanted to go out against all of them and win. If she's boostin as much as she can and barely clearing the knuckle that's sort of all the info she probably needed. If you can't get to that second line on a straight air?

Windless, bluebird day so couldn't ask for better conditions, but there's always another comp, right?

Adding lead isn't like adding muscle. It would fuck with her in the air rotation wise even if she's hitting the jumps faster.

More like I haven't taken physics since high school and I don't really remember anything about inertia or how mass impacts velocity/ acceleration when friction is involved. All I remember is a lot of questions about crates.

velocity = mass*acceleration...

The primary acceleration forces would be gravity and any skier-induced forces (skating). But mass is very important.

Your weight is helping you not loose so much speed to friction and drag, no? And wouldn't a light person would have a lower terminal velocity. Maybe if she wore a racer suit she'd overcome some drag?

inb4 skiers in 2025 wear racer suits to get as much speed as possible for throwing penta flips.

Friction yes, drag kind of (indirectly because a person's mass is generally correlated to their surface area). But these forces are still dominated by the gravitational force and skier skating, so the net effect of her (lack of) mass is less speed.

inb4 skiers start bulking to get as much speed as possible for pentaflips.

Okay judging by the above I guess I should have expanded on this extremely simplified statement.

The force that I'm talking about is weight. Force (weight) = m * g. Weight has a direction towards the center of the Earth and, due to the slope of the ski hill, this causes 'forward' movement.

As far as inertia goes.. inertia is an object's ability to resist acceleration (in our case friction.. acceleration in the negative direction). The greater inertia of a heavier person causes friction to play less of a role in slowing them down. This makes them go faster on a ski hill.
