How is there no thread on this yet? Apparently some pretty nasty interrogation techniques were used against terror suspects without positive results following 9/11 and then they lied about these results to the White House.

zzzskizzzI don't care about that,if these torture methods actually got us valuable information like the Bush administration claimed it did. I would have no problem with that, but yeah we were just torturing people for the hell of it, and I am against that.


Cool so you're pro-torture as long as it gets us "valuable information?" How about for criminal investigations? In fact, why don't we just torture everyone in the US to make sure none of us are hiding anything from the govt.

"Hey Smokey McPotts, we're not actually sure if you sell weed but we're going to torture you anyway just to check if you have valuable information."

If your only criterion is that torture gets us "valuable information" then how can you determine in a non-arbitrary manner who gets tortured and who doesn't? That's the fucking problem with torture: at what point do you get to say that torture is justified? I realize that torture doesn't work, but that's only ancillary to the fact that torture is just morally wrong full-stop. If your only objection to torture is that the particular methods we used didn't work then you're also committed to saying that we just need new methods to torture people, and sorry my man but that's still messed up. I don't want to live in the only developed, civilized country that still fucking tortures people.

Cool man that's your opinion, I draw the line at a terrorist. You think they're morally right and deserve to be treat at equals. They are an enemy of war, and will kill you and me in a heart beat if they had the chance. If we can stop that group by getting information from torture I'm all for it. But again we didn't so we shouldnt.

Again, that's morally arbitrary. "Terrorist" is a completely vague term which encompasses Osama and the people who flew planes into the trade towers all the way down to people who sneak video cameras into slaughterhouses to film cows being run over with forklifts. Should animal rights "terrorists" be liable to torture as well? Also, by your criterion you have no grounds on which to criticize the US's torture practices detailed in this report, because I'm sure the CIA thought it would get "valuable information" at the time. If something is wrong, it's wrong at the moment it happens. It doesn't become wrong at some point later on after it happened.

well i'll put my two cents into this shit storm again.


part of the torture was an experiment. and one of those was the good cop bad cop game. they would torture the individual and then see if he was more likely to give the information to the person giving him to torture or if we would confide in the good guy and get the torture to stop. so by that logic the torture did help them get information however it doesnt play into the statistics yall are using.

Well, you're wrong. Quoting from the first article listed in OP

The harsh interrogations weren’t effective and didn’t produce key information that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden, contrary to claims by program supporters.

Contrary to claims by the agency, the brutal methods didn’t lead U.S. officials to the identity of bin Laden’s courier, Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti, a finding that helped uncover the al-Qaida leader’s location, according to the findings.

The committee reviewed 20 of the most frequent and prominent examples of interrogation cases that the CIA claimed produced valuable information. None of the cases showed that information was obtained that saved lives or that couldn’t have been gleaned from other means, according to the findings.
Instead, the panel found that the CIA used interrogation techniques that differed significantly from those authorized by the Department of Justice and described to U.S. policy makers and lawmakers, according to the summary.

Releasing the findings will give terrorists fresh ammunition to escalate their violence and put the lives of additional U.S. officials and allies at risk, said Representative Mike Rogers, a Michigan Republican and chairman of the House intelligence committee.
