The best place in the US?

Hey NS!

So, I'm going to move to the US in a few months, and probably stay for a few years, but I don't really know where to go.

Since most of you guys are from the US, I figured I could probably get some good advice here.

I'm looking for a place obviously not too far from some good skiing (powder preferably, so I guess the east coast is off the list?). But also somewhere nice, not too expensive, and where I would have a good chance at finding a job in my area of expertise (digital marketing/business management), so I think close to a fairly big city is probably best too. I'm 25 and just graduated college.

So I don't know, Utah, Colorado, California, Alaska, Wyoming, other ? Where would you go if you could move anywhere?

I'm also taking any tips and advise I can get on moving to the US!

tl;dr: I'm moving to the states, where to go?

Well if you are looking for a good job market then you can cross both wyoming and alaska off the list (people actually have to live there for a good job market to exsist. Try Seattle or Denver.

Really it is hard to find good skiing close to huge cities. I would look into Salt Lake City if I were you. That is if you don't mind the Mormons.

Utah is where its at. That is if you don't mind a nice, peaceful, and welcoming culture.

Missoula is not a bad choice either.

Missoula is not a bad choice either.


I doubt OP would consider Missoula a large enough city

Denver or Salt Lake City. SLC is closer to the mountains with better snow, but not as big so the job prospects would be tough. Denver is a great place to both live your life and live your professional career. Most of my qualified friends who moved here got really good jobs

If you need to consider cost of living as well, then your only "best" option is going to be Seattle, Washington which is a major marketing hub. After you're looking at the major US cities like LA, SF, Chicago, and NYC.... SF is probably the most difficult to move to because of cost of living. LA is more affordable but 1.5 hours to mediocre skiing and 4.5 hours to great skiing (but somehow we all manage).

After that, if skiing is more important, I'd say SLC is going to be your next best bet. Then Denver... but the I70 cooridor is pretty flat and a zoo--more so than any other region I have been.

The next options include checking out the growing cities... Durango, Reno, Ogden, Bend, Santa Fe and so forth. Your job may not be as great, but they offer better skiing options.

Based on my personality, if I were from abroad, I'd be looking at Seattle, Durango, Bend, and Los Angeles as a safety.


If Canada were an option... .I'd be looking Vancouver.

Seattle Washington or around that area, if you are from a smaller country/ city and are used to your ski hill being super close, get used to everything being at the least, two hours or more away from where you live. My local mountain I can make it to in an hour and half or so.

Somewhere east of Seattle or portland Oregon. Not the best skiing but 1,000+ inches at baker sounds dope and your job prospects should be good in those cities.

Also if you can work from home than you can go anywhere you want.

As everyone else said Denver, SLC, or Seattle. I've been to all 3 and I liked Salt Lake the best, just had the best culture I thought (and in-n-out). However, Salt Lake isn't as big as the other two so probably not as many opportunities.

Also, if there aren't any good opportunities in good ski places check out Atlanta. There are a ton of options for pretty much every field. And you can hop on a direct flight to just about any ski destination.

Reno Nevada. Tesla has begun to pump 6 Billion dollars into the local economy and its about to explode with jobs. Skiing is 30 minutes away, BLM land surrounds it ( free camping, offroading, exploring .. endless) yep, weeno.

I live in Wenatchee, WA. It's a pretty cool town, theres not a very good night life, but the nearest mountain is 20 minutes away. The power and water costs are super cheap. It's right next to a river. Pretty much an amazing town if you like the outdoors but if you want to go to the club or something this is not the town.

For what you want, SLC. Tahoe is great but their snowfall is unreliable, Jackson is fairly remote, Washington might be nice but the ski areas are a kinda long drive from the city (hour+ as opposed to Alta/Snowbird being ~20 minutes from Sandy/Midvale/Cottonwood Heights). If I was in your place I'd go for either south suburbs of SLC or Seattle area.

Portland maine only though. You won't find a job anywhere but portland. Maine is a really nice place to be though. Its a smaller more remote version of washington. I just wish maine had more consistant full time jobs. Its a lot of seasonal work.

Anywhere thats located in the Reno/Tahoe/Sacramento general area is cheap and next to great skiing. Reno the drive is the same as being in SLC to skiing Sac its about the same as being in Denver.

Reno is an especially good place to go for short term stays the casinos are empty in the winter and they give away the rooms. Its also pretty warm when you get down from the mountains. And if you are in Tahoe itself you are close to both those cities.





Bend Oregon (Mt Bachelor) and Aspen (and surrounding towns like Glenwood Springs) are the best small cities near skiing. Both are dank as fuck and I would look into them if you are willing to go a little smaller. Those cities are literally paradise.

Dunno what the area around Jackson Hole is like but Im going there at some point this year Ive heard its nice up there.



Stay out of Utah and Denver IMO. Nothing wrong with SLC it might work but its a weird place. Summitt County is a gaper filled hell hole avoid it at all costs the rest of Colorado is great but it isn't close to Denver.

We have small ski hills in town and Alyeska Resort is only 45 minutes away depending on what side of town you are on, plus we have amazing backcountry.

MAde me think of hampton beach lol.

That said there are some beautiful places up there. Did a couple weeks when I was younger. Lived in the 603 for a winter but didn't really explore too much. Northern NH, VT, and NY are all beautiful. Maine's really nice too I just don't get over there ever much.
