How do you music?

So newschoolers, what are your music interests, and when do you listen? Do you change music depending on the situation or use music to change your mood?

Personally, I Used to be into oldies when I was young and then moved towards classic rock because that is what all my dad listened to as I grew up. A while ago I discovered the rap world and got into it a bit. Eventually I listened to Wu Tang and Flocka and more "hardcore" rap so to speak. Lately though I've bee listen to more chill music; Bob Marley, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pretty lights, etc...

I listen to music to pump myself up to try new things while skiing or to just get over problems in school or life in general. When doing house work or killing time on the bus I use it as a way to keep my mind busy and not get too bored when doing things I don't like. I have to say though that whenever I feel down I just turn straight to the power of music, and I've been doing that a bunch lately, thus inspiring me to make this thread.

And always remember, You can't touch music, but music can touch you.

I like all kinds of music if it has a soul. I dont do overproduced pop, pop rock shitty rap etc. I spend all my free time and money seeing music all over the country and some otber spots. I generally bring instruments in mh car and play with strangers at every opportunity. If somebody pulls out a guitar in a lot at the mt ill pull out a drum, stuff like that. Music is life

Music has become such a big part of my life over the past year. In regards to both classic music and more progressive modern era music. I'm an allstate bassoon player /claim, as well as an avid guitar, piano, drums, bass, banjo, saxophone, DAW, and recently flute player. As far as what I like to listen too I'm all over the board. My iPod is loaded with everything from AC/DC to Method Man, from TwoFresh to Otis Redding, Kanye West to Ambassaduers and everything in between. I have a fairly large collection of records spanning Dean Martin to a Tribe Called Quest. The groups I find that I enjoy most currently are The xx, The neighbourhood, Alt-J, and Odesza. Being in Highschool most of the money I make goes directly towards buying tickets to shows and traveling to go see them. I was at the Odesza concert in Madison, saw Yellowclaw in Chicago and just last night saw RiFF RAFF in Iowa City. I can remember the one song and band that made me change the direction my life was going. I saw Alt-J play on a recommendation and the song Breezeblocks made me want to change who I was. That whole show just made me think and decide that I want to be a better person and really dive into music. I could go on forever about how much I love music and what it means to me but for now I'm going to /endrant.

I have a YouTube music app on my phone, and it's the only app I really use. I listen to music that matches the current vibe, or point in my life. When I think back to old memories, I hear songs that remind me of that time period. Its like a soundtrack for my life. Like the song "Time to escape" -Hot Snakes, makes me remember playing Tony Hawk, after skiing, when I was 12. It can be that specific.

I am pretty open when it comes to music but I would have to say my favorite would be classic country. And by that I mean anytime between 1960 and 1995 with some exceptions on each side. There is nothing more relaxing to me than listening to some old George Jones or Merl Haggard. The songs back then were more focused on meaning rather than how hard the guitarist can play. Of still current artists I would have to say Alan Jackson and Vince Gill are my favorites. It's to bad they have been pushed to the side to make way for the garbage we hear on the radio today.

I almost came out there and washington to repo that car and see phish. Almost gone a few times for phish or moe.

I want to get out there and do some hiking at some point as well. Pacific northwest looks beautiful. Been around northern california a bit but never even to the very top of the state.

I might come out for cutters camp in the spring if I can afford to pay for my whole thing and flight myself. If I do that I'll probably spend some extra time, maybe hike mt rainier and some other stuff and do a nice loop around parts of washington and oregon.

Would love to do a northern route cross country trip at some point as well. Definitely a few states I still haven't been to that I'd love to check out. Almost made it from chicago to the gorge in 2012 but I had multiple rides fall through. If some bands play on the way it'd be even more likely.

Maybe I'll line it up so that I stop at an nsers house with a backyard setup that I can hurt myself on in every state along the way.

Come hit WA, you won't regret it, it just keeps gettif prettier as you go farther north. Giking and camping is supreme in Washingon with plenty of mountains in the cascades it is hard to run into other hikers while out.

In regards to music, I am definately more of a mood music kind of guy and i for sure associate memories with music. For example, I associate the chilis with my brother, Miike Snow with 5th grade years, Wu-Tang with Heni, Savant, the who, collective soul, dave matthews band, and foo fighters all i can assosicate with skiing, there are so many more to add.

Playlists compile a lot of what i listen to, as well as cd's and hardcopy versions of albums. Nothing like listening to a sublime album on the boom box from 10 years ago. When i am with my girlfriend my music tastes also change, not neccesaarly for the worse like you may think, the chicks got good taste but i will switch over from my metal/ rock playlist which has metallica, iron maiden, ratt, quiet riot, tool, megadeth, and nirvana to my chill playlist.

With regards to rap, i can tolerate it and some i do really like Pac, Biggie, Dre, Wu-tang, Ice Cube, 50 cent, Kendrick, and others, but otherwise i am out of it or i am listening to make myself laugh or when i am driving. I think the rap industry has lost a lot of its soul that it used to have in the 90's and 2000's and the rappers today just aren't coming from anywhere and their rhymes don't say anything meaningful. Unless you call objectivfing women, drowning oneself in money and bitches, fantasizing about cars, and using the n word profusely meanignful then that genre suits you well.

Finally, i am a huge fan of ska reggae stuff like sublime, pepper, sublime with rome, 311, and others.

Would love to do a northern route cross country trip at some point as well. Definitely a few states I still haven't been to that I'd love to check out. Almost made it from chicago to the gorge in 2012 but I had multiple rides fall through. If some bands play on the way it'd be even more likely.

I grew up listening to psychedelic rock and classic rock. My mom was a huge festie and dead head and she used to sing me eyes of the world to make me pass out. That has always stuck with me, and she most certainly passed her love of Jim Morrison down to me too. She brought me to my first festival and it was either the first or second gathering of the vibes right after Jerry died and I was only like a couple days old.

Once I got into skating when I was like 10 or so I started listening to a lot of ska and punk rock. Less than jake, big d and the kids table, sublime, rancid, green day, the offspring, the list goes on. And I still love to listen to a lot of that while I'm riding but now I've definitely mellowed out a bit with my music choices. Went to a lot of warped tours.

Now it's a lot of big gigantic, pretty lights, r2dj, twiddle, lettuce, dosio, and things of the sort. But I still listen to anything. I love rap, just listened to some of wus new stuff and the woman with the tattooed hands will always be one of my favorite songs . I love alternative music in general, I'm finally seeing alt-j this spring after missing another one of their shows. Rise against will always be one of my favorite bands and same with rage against the machine.

And I now I go to a bunch of different kinds of fests. Warped for some hard(ish)core, vibes and wormtown for the jam bands, bisco and Hudson and moonrise for the electronica, and Boston calling for the alternative. I would definitely say music is a big part of my life.

With regards to rap, i can tolerate it and some i do really like Pac, Biggie, Dre, Wu-tang, Ice Cube, 50 cent, Kendrick, and others, but otherwise i am out of it or i am listening to make myself laugh or when i am driving. I think the rap industry has lost a lot of its soul that it used to have in the 90's and 2000's and the rappers today just aren't coming from anywhere and their rhymes don't say anything meaningful. Unless you call objectivfing women, drowning oneself in money and bitches, fantasizing about cars, and using the n word profusely meanignful then that genre suits you well.

Finally, i am a huge fan of ska reggae stuff like sublime, pepper, sublime with rome, 311, and others.

In regards to music, I am definately more of a mood music kind of guy and i for sure associate memories with music. For example, I associate the chilis with my brother, Miike Snow with 5th grade years, Wu-Tang with Heni, Savant, the who, collective soul, dave matthews band, and foo fighters all i can assosicate with skiing, there are so many more to add.

Playlists compile a lot of what i listen to, as well as cd's and hardcopy versions of albums. Nothing like listening to a sublime album on the boom box from 10 years ago. When i am with my girlfriend my music tastes also change, not neccesaarly for the worse like you may think, the chicks got good taste but i will switch over from my metal/ rock playlist which has metallica, iron maiden, ratt, quiet riot, tool, megadeth, and nirvana to my chill playlist.
