if you could maybe just put race aside for a moment here and consider the fact that a man assaulted a police officer after failing to comply with a reasonable request to get out of the middle of the road, tried to take his gun, and was killed, you might realize that there was no crime committed.

and yes, michael brown was a man. he was old enough to vote, old enough to graduate high school, and old enough to realize you don't go toe to toe with a cop. he wasn't a defenceless child, he was not a saint, nor a martyr. he was a man who made a few really poor decisions on that day and he paid the price. it sucks that it had to happen, but it did have to happen.

say what you want about wilson, call him a coward, whatever. he was a respected police officer with a spotless employment record (yes, his department got shut down because of some issues within the community, but he was one of only a few officers brought on to the new department because of his record), and absolutely zero known / recorded history with any racist groups. he did his job to the best of his ability for the entire time he was a cop (look it up, you love google), and now his career is over because of this incident. the sacrifices he made and will continue to make are beyond any of our comprehension. he knew when he pulled the trigger that it meant taking someone's life, and he did so because it was his job. plain and simple

My initial reaction was, "giant dude, resisting arrest, cop responds as he was trained to, dude unfortunately dies because of health problems, case closed". But after getting some more info, and watching the thing closely, with the sound ("I can't breathe" is just chilling) it's pretty clear that they... killed the guy. For no reason. And I think any reasonable person of any race who HAS taken the time to look at the facts there probably agrees.

The Michael Brown thing is a bit more nuanced, in that if you read Wilson's grand jury testimony, it's compelling and more or less makes sense. The grand jury was - and this is unusual - presented with absolutely every piece of physical evidence that was available. If, after looking at that evidence, and then listening to Wilson, they thought "I believe that this guy is telling the truth", then they made the right decision by not indicting him. I know many people are inclined, based either on pre-existing biases or anger or a dozen other things, to disbelieve him on basic principle. But until I'm given some reason to think otherwise, I'm inclined to trust that the people who heard from the officer first-hand at least came to their decision honestly, and didn't think "this guy might be lying through his teeth here, hard to say, but let's just let him off the hook anyway".
