Thinking about getting one of these. But I really can't justify why I need one. Does anyone on NS have one of these or something like it? If so, how have you found it helped you or been useful in any way other than simply telling you information about your habits?
personally i'm against fitbit and would recommend another brand. the lady and i each got one as xmas presents last year, liked them for the month or so we wore them and then she got the dreaded fitbit "rash" (or burn, whatever it actually was) similar to this
there were many many many reported cases of this happening and fitbit tried to brush it under the rug as a "nickel allergy". much later they finally recalled the model and stopped selling them, but never really owned up to the issues. in my opinion they handled the situation terribly and i will not support or recommend fitbit to anyone. it seems they have re-named the previous model and are selling it under a different name now- i'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they got the issue fixed. thankfully it healed before the wedding but the marks must have been visible about 2 months or so.
there was a 280 page thread on their support forums about it, not sure if you'll be able to read it without a login or not but fuck fitbit.
i thought the garmin one looked like a promising alternative. it was on the verge of being released when i was last doing research (spring?) so i never went forward with getting one, but the reviews appear decent and that is probably what i would get if i got another tracker. nike has one but iirc it had durability issues. the jawbone one looks meh imo, and i don't think it has any sort of screen either so you can't quickly monitor it as easy
it's fun to have one- but not necessary. for me it was interesting to see how much i actually walked in a normal day vs a more active one. if you're in half decent shape it's not going to be as much of a motivator to reach a certain goal steps or activity but if you're a lardass i think it's a great way to set fitness goals for yourself. i'm not sure how the other systems are, but i'll admit one thing that was fun about fitbit was that the interface allowed you to friend people and track/compare their activity to yours, which would make it a little bit of a competition throughout the week.
