Nothing these days is designed to kill gapers. Stuff like that is designed to ad an extra dimension.
Things had to back off for a few years but now they're getting progressive again as the sport progresses. Also mountains that build stuff like this have other features designed for beginners.
The park that that feature was in had a fuf to down rail. and some other bigger stuff and then goes down into an all wood park, the xl park, or the large park. You have the option of skipping that trail and going down nitro and hitting smaller stuff.
That said it's a fine line on the front edge of progression. How creative can you be without getting yourself in trouble. Hopefully people stay safe and insurance stays happy and parks can continue to build progressive features.
I personally love this trend and would be pissed if something happened and we had to slide back.
As far as that picture. I had a corrugated set up like that but a little bigger. Even the younger snowboarders were gettin it and some of the better skiers.
If the obstacle is pretty clearly visible and built well, that's about the best you can do. you just hope to god the beginners use some kind of decent judgement and stay away.

i literally had to pull a 10 year old out of this feature because his ski went through the fence and he flipped over it, he was wrapped around that thing like a knot. Point is when i see these features i think "damn im pumped to hit that" but i also realized the potential for gapers to get absolutely RECKED on them
Or even simpler and the gapers won't break their ankles- have a jump over a construction fence- gapers follow down the mountain thinking the trail is closed; all the park skiers jump over the fence thus entering the park
At my hill we have to make our own jumps and because we get so little snow we usually make them mostly out of piles of sticks and stuff. One jump we made last year was called the gaper killer because it had a stick sticking out of the front just below the lip so if you tried to roll over the lip on skis you would nut yourself. Unfortunately it broke off and collapsed in the first week.
At my mountain they closed part of the park because little kids kept hurting themselves trying to hit stuff that was too technical for them. Really made me mad.
I guess it's been over 8 years so I can mention this. At gore SWIM built this perfect 7 foot tall step down. Only had enough snow and was only supposed to build a 3 footer. Previously they had to lame jumps called "big" and bigger" that were maybe 4 feet tall at the most raging point of the year.
Anyway SWIM smoked a blunt in the woods and tupac told SWIM to make it big. SWIM spent 2 full days farming snow from the woods next to it making it bigger. Ended up with a cat pass wide 2 foot flat deck everything all squared off and solid.
Being gore there are gapers everywhere. People were trying to ruin SWIM's nice art and SWIM couldn't do anything. SWIM ended up shaving the back flat and leaving the excess snow a few feet away. SWIM sat in the woulds and laughed when the gaper crews came back around and went face first into a pile of snow and got stuck.
I just overheard that from somebody and had absolutely nothing at all to do with it. I would NEVER EVER do something like that :)
