theabortionatorNo way. I haven't even come close to making it above the poverty line. Mt life for the win.
Someday
Haha, this will be very relevant to your situation then.
I take back what I said about being below the poverty line, the line itself is roughly 12k per year, and my reported income was slightly above that. My actual income was probably 3-4x that, but it was all in cash tips so the IRS doesn't know shit about it.
In retrospect, I kinda wish I would have reported at least some of it, because once you go above roughly 16k a year you become eligible for Obamacare reimbursement. What a lot of people don't understand about Obamacare is that it is not 'health insurance' in and of itself; you go find private 3rd party insurance coverage just like before, only now the government will reimburse you a proportional amount of that coverage fee according to your income. It's not 'universal healthcare' by any means, it's just a mid-way point to encourage people to invest in coverage they wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. Just to give you an idea, most private insurance plans run anywhere from $400-600 a month, and that's for just medium-level plans that still have pretty high deductibles... fucking highway robbery I tell ya.
Since I fall just below the Obamacare eligibility line, I am eligible for Medicaid instead. You have to apply for it online, just like Obamacare. Medicaid is technically 'free,' but only a select few hospitals/doctors/dentists accept it, and the ones that do have 2-3 month or longer wait periods just to schedule an appointment. Kinda fucking sucks really, but at least its something, and I won't get fined at the end of the year for not having insurance; I'm just grateful I don't have a pressing health issue where the wait times would really affect me.Needless to say, finding a job that has good benefits is my #1 priority right now.
If you have more questions about what plans you do/don't qualify for, check this website:

I love the mountain life too, but if you're not careful with insurance planning you can easily get buried in 6-figure medical bills for the rest of your life. Real talk. Good luck man.
