A few highlights from the NRCS May 1st, snow survey report. However, despite it all, this has been the best ski season of my life!
--- Like last month, snowpack across the southern and western parts of Alaska remain below normal, much of it well below normal. Most low lying areas have melted out. Southcentral remain much below normal, though parts of the Kenai Peninsula made gains in snow-pack during the month.
--- The Kenai Peninsula also received about twice of normal April precipitation, ranging from 122% at Turnagain Pass to 303% of normal at Kachemak Creek SNOTEL, on the southwestern side of Kachemak Bay. This moisture extended east across Prince William Sound where sites averaged 177% of normal precipitation for the month.
--- The Anchorage area and the Mat-Su region received mixed precipitation with several sites both below and above normal for the month. The Mat-Su Basin averaged 79% of normal for the month and 70% for the winter.
--- Like the rest of the winter, temperatures across most of Alaska were above normal during the month of April. In most areas temperatures were further above normal than last month. Only the coastal areas in Southcentral and Southeast were closer to normal this month, rather than last month. Cordova and Juneau were only 1°F above normal for the month. These warm temperatures across the state made for an early spring and advanced melting of the snowpack in many places.
