Eh, I guess, but I doubt most people will see it the same way and therefore be encouraged to buy the gear as much as it was a straight $50 discount. It's a strategy I think most people will see through, though I wonder how it will play out for these companies.

Fair point. But I think it works particularly well during this season. A lot of people are shopping for gifts right now, and parents who are buying something for their kid will see this as a good deal to get both the product, plus a gift card. I imagine it wouldn't be as effective during a time like Boxing Day or as a general sale.
