so I am in the market for a car that 1. drives ok in snow 2. is somewhat fast. the sti and evo seem like good options but i'm not set on just these two cars. and other ideas/feedback on these two would be much appreciated
If money is no option STI out of these options if you want standard then still a STI. But honestly i had a 5 speed 120hp car and that ripped everything up. But I would go for the G37x or any G or Q series (that's infinti if you dont already know). Also turbo cars you have to run 93 premium gas (mucho money). Better to get a N/A (naturally aspirated) car. But if you want the "SCENE" thing i dont know how to help you. If your just getting it for the name . Just dont slam your STI or EVO when you go skiing. Not worth replacing parts (trust me). Or FWD works good too anything Honda or Toyota. Honestly i can talk cars forever but its not worth getting shit talk from everyone else for my opinion. Just go out drive a bunch of shit and see what you like. For all we know you might like the ford fusion AWD better than the STI.

False, although most do require 91. You wouldn't even be able to fuel up most places if you needed 93. It's usually no more than a few extra dollars per tank to put 91 in.
Don't ignore the regular WRX either. It's cheaper and a better daily driver because it's a little less aggressive than the STI. The stiff suspension can be a bit jarring on rough roads.
You could also just look for an Impreza 2.5RS. Nothing wrong with N/A, 170HP, and AWD. Nobody really needs to be running a turbo'ed 280+HP car as their daily driver, although I could be wrong.
Try and find an Evo IX as close to stock as possible, you can't go wrong with the 4g63, on the IX you get mivec and active center diff for (tarmac, gravel, snow), a 1.5 way LSD, plus brembo's recaro's and bilstein's, 5 or 6 speed depending on the trim. Unless you like hopping on the subaru bandwagon, then just get an 05 wrx wagon or forester xt, which are far better skimobiles. just my .02 cents.
the evo really is on a completely different level from the STI. the STI comes close in numbers and power and all that, but the actual driving experience is nowhere near as good as the evo. the sti understeeers and is annoying to drive at the limit where the evo comes alive at the limit.
I have an 08 evo x gsr. Car is unstoppable in the snow. Just whatever you do buy as close to stock as you can, do your research, and have a nice cushion of cash to throw at fixing things i.e timing chain.
Ok first off just letting you know evo and sti are my favorite cars ever, you know ive never been one for super cars. Built not bought in my opinion, both are amazing in the snow but i would say the evo is a better choice. Because first off yes the boxer motor makes a great sound with unequal length headers. But your rocker covers will leak oil all the time its a very common problem with subies. Second reason is traction, the evo has a active diff which means you have 3 modes to choose from. Gravel, snow, and pavement. And will most likely have better traction in snowy conditions. Last reason you should go with an evo in they are so easy to make power out of, yes you can make alot with the sti but the evo is easier. If your into tuning your car and modding it to make power get a evo 8. Parts are plentiful since every car guy has one
You can cruise with your douchey Subie bros

Flat fours suck dick for big builds
Blowing headgaskets and ringlands are a constant factor
Get an Evo if you can handle it, both are fine and will be fun.
I have a 2014 WRX hatchback, absolutely love it. Got 10 inches today in NEPA and I had no problems in the snow, the thing is literally a tank. Granted I had some winter Nokian Hakka tires on lol.
for warned this is going to be one massive run on clump of words. id just got with a na subie i had a 08 impreza hatchback that i beat the piss out of i bought it with 96k on the clock and ran it to 130k in just a year the only thing that went on it was the tranny 5speed(didn't cost much as i'm an auto mechanic) but as mentioned before i beat the carp out of it launched it drifted it anything you could think of i threw at it that being said i sold it and brought a vw tdi i needed the fuel economy right now i'm getting 45mpg yeah yeah yeah dirty diesel although not awd if you know how to drive in the snow you'd be just fine its by no mean a fast car peppy yes fast no i think the loss in power is well worth the fuel mileage 140hp and 236ft lbs of torque you cant go wrong although it is a bit more expensive to maintain and timing belt due every 80k. end horribly put together what ever that was

I took a look briefly at a few wrx's when I was looking for a new car recently. They're super nice and definitely pretty fast, but were just to small.
That being said...I didn't really see any worth while buying that were priced less than ~$22,000 or so and those were bone stock factory certified with less than 20,30000 miles on it tops.
Yea you can get into one for way cheaper and if its a project car thats fine. But who would spend thousands and thousands of dollars of hard earned money on a modded, unreliable, wrx...I just don't get it.
I love my 2010 A4 Avant. Handles well in snow, plenty of room and is still pretty fast. If you want a step up from that, you could go with an Allroad. A WRX is also a good option being significantly cheaper to fix and mod. Not too familiar with evo's so I'm not gonna go into that.

It is too pricey right now. I think in 2-3 years, there should be some used ones on the market. Looks to be the most practical high performance car on the market. One day... One day...

You're 100% right. There is no need for 300hp in a dd, there not even much point on the road unless you like speeding tickets. And if what you really want is a track car, you're better off buying one and not trashing your DD.
I went this route, bought a 2010 Impreza with 60,000km for 12k (Canadian), perfect shape, manual tranny, fun to drive, good on gas, cheap on insurance, enough power to get me from A to B, and it gets through the snow the exact same as a wrx or STI which is the main reason I wanted awd in the first place. It was at least 6k less than a comparable wrx and 12k less than an STI.
I'm taking that money I've saved, and will be buying a summer/track car next year, and 12k can go a longggggg way in the sports car market, especially with canada being fully opened up to the 1990s JDM imports now.

I'm in love with these especially the color but I'd still take an Evo over one. They're just about the same performance from what I think I've seen. Wish these were two doors
Regular WRX all the way... for the cost differential between a wrx and and sti you can build one hell of a car... my buddy's 2.0 wrx motor pushes 480hp with just $1800 worth of used bolt ons and a tune. The sti is not worth the price
