HOMOPHOBIA ON THIIS SITE

why is there so much homophobia on this site? everytime sombody thinks someone is stupid, bad at skiing etc. they call them 'gay', 'fag', 'faggot', homo', or in the case or the really bad spellers, 'faygett'.

have any of you heard about racism? it used to be a big problem (and still is in some places) but is slowly becoming less popular. now, homophobia is taking over. it is very similar to racism because it is a form of discrimination against people who are different.

if you said someone skied 'like a black person', you would be called a racist and people would be mad, however, if you say,:you ski like a fag' nobody cares and most just laugh or agree. THIS NEEEDS TO STOP. i know many gay people who have been tormented their whole lives, have no friends, and fear their safety because they were born different. gay people are people too and deserve to be treated as such


hopefully someday we can look back and ask ourselves 'how could people have beed such homophobic assholes back then?' just as we look back on the age of racism.

i really really don't agree with homophobic comments...but society itself is what pushes homophobia into everyone's life, not the newschool ski community. It's nice to think that you can make a difference by trying to convert one or two people to think differently, but the issue itself won't ever be removed by posting it in the new school skiing community's messageboard...

wow this is getting out of control. This arguement has some validitity left, but not too much. We all know(if you don't then you shouldn't argue in here), that when most people use the word 'gay' or 'fag' to describe someone or sometihng, they, as previously mentioned, do not use it in a literal sense. Furthermore, while there is no gay-bashing intended (also previously stated), there is some done unintentionally. This 'unintentional bashing of gays' is not truly homophobia, because it does not signify a hate,loathing, or even disgust for gays. It merely means, in most cases, that the user of the word has infact, merely been very mistaken in what word(s) to use to describe something. As said before, 'Gay' and stupid, or 'Fag', and idot are not connotations, but in todays society, as sad as it may be, they are not tied in a litteral sense, but by a different felling. To go back to what I was saying before, thsi unintentional 'bashing of gays', is not homophobia. Get it right, it is pure ignorance of the English language, and the lack of a vocabulary large enough to explain one's fellings and thoughts. In the future, when making posts of this nature, just use ignorance (once again) as a heading, not HMOPHOBIA!

im not saying it isnt bad, im saying that its not homophobia, its ignorance of the english language, and the lack of a vocabulary sufficient to make one's point known with words that are used correctly. When someone says somebody else is 'gay', they usually don't mean it literally (atleast in my esperience), they say that because that is the most 'powerful' word they can think of. It, in the case of this threads originator, is not homophobia, its lack of vocabulary. I agree, its bad, and there are forms of homophobia, but this is not one of them. This is just stupidity

k, couple things then im getting out of this post. to clarify, i think there are only very few (if any) people here that think when called 'gay' because of them doing something stupid, that the other person is actually believing they are homosexual. It should kinda go without saying that the person is simply trying to put the other down. Maybe saying stuff like that isn't expressing a lack of tolerance on your part directly, but simply the fact that the words have such conotations to begin with stems from such close mindedness. Imagine the sort of reaction to the following scene:
You and a pal are shopping (i am expecting to be called 'fag' or the like from this example, so lets say you're in a ski shop!)
So, you just decided to buy some _____(fill in dream ski of choice)____, and as you cary them to the checkout counter you stumble, trip, and the skis fall harmlessly to the ground. Then your friend laughs and says something like 'God, don't be such a clumsy ass nigger'.....

I would expect you would get some pretty interesting looks

And Don't tell me its different, cause its not!

but seriously, its just an expression a word can mean a number of things based on the context in which its used. if i call you a fag, usually it doesnt even relate to homosexuality, its just a way of calling you an idiot, and no body really thinks that when i call a movie or something ga that i really think its a homosexual movie, because in that context it doesnt actually even have anything to do with that. i say gay, and fag all the time, but im in no way a homophobe,

ok, here's my input; i would get just as creeped out if some ugly ass girl was hitting on me or gettin too close to me as I would if it was some guy. I mean, if you look at it like that, it's not necesarily an issue of prejudice, simply your rejection of unwanted attention. There is a difference between this and 'gay-bashing' however. 'Homophobes' may not want to be around a gay person, but most of them would never harm a person because he/she was gay. Simply not agreeing with the lifestyle should not be a problem because as much as it's a gay persons lifestyle of choice(and don't give me the 'it's not their choice stuff right now) to be gay, it's another persons choice to not approve of that life style.

Yeah, the two are imcomparable. Black people are born black, and everyone can tell, and its not like its a bad thing, they are totaly normal, jsut a different color. Gay is a personality trait. People don't even have to know when a gay person is gay, unless the gay person feels they need to show their gay pride off and act like some gay people do. Gay people aren't normal, so it's not surprising that they don't have many friends. I don't have a big problem with a gay person that doesn't show it, its the fags that decide to have pride and act like they are someone special that get hate.

Homosexuals are entitled to every last bit of 'pride' that heterosexuals are, and they have every right to show that openly and publicly. There is no definitive scientific evidence to show that homosexuality is or is not a produce of genetics, but it doesn't matter either way. If a person chooses to be homosexual, he or she has every right to be homosexual, even as a person who may be born homosexual has every right to be so. Furthermore, it's not up to you to decide how much pride a homosexual should or should not have. A gay man has as much of a right to be proud as you do as a proud heterosexual. Why is it that you don't have a problem with 'fags' as long as they don't show it? Get used to it. People are gay, always have been, always will be, and they don't give a damn about what you think about it. You can choose to hate them, or, if you sit down and think about it openly, you can realize that all people are different, and that's okay.

And what are you talking about when you say that 'gay people don't have many friends'? Every homosexual that I've had the pleasure to know as a friend (and I know many) has as many friends as anyone else. You know, I think if you'd be willing to accept the fact that a person can be homosexual and proud of it, that person would be more willing to be friends with you. After all, I don't choose friends who think that I am somehow inferior to them because of my 'personality trait.'

im not homophobic, and while i think alot of assholes are, at this point, calling someone gay, or calling them a faggot, has NOTHING to do with sexuality. when someone calls someone else gay, at this point, it is the same as calling them an asshole or a dumbass or stupid, and the intention has absolutly nothing to do with them loving other men. this may be offensive to some people who actually are gay, but honestly they need to lighten up and realize that in most situations, it doesnt have much to do with sexuality.

^I understand where you are coming from there, and you are right, they do have the right to openly express their homosexuality. What I am saying is that when gay people do show it, and act it, they are asking for the things that happen to them. Not to say that what happens to them is right, because by no means is it right, but thats what people do, and when they choose to openly express themselves in that way, people are going to discriminate against them. Now that I think about it, I live in a small town, and have never really met a gay person, so maybe I am being simple minded. Its just that the whole idea of men being attracted to other men is just so......weird. I guess all my prejudices come from what I have seen in movies and such.

If you argue that you don't mean it literally, why do you use it at all if not out of ignorance, hatred or fear? To call an inanimate object gay is obvious not literal; however, it obviously is equating the word gay with 'something that is bad/stupid/etc.' If you say that 'gay' in your vernacular means stupid or dumb, then what do you call homosexual 'gay' people? To say, 'he's gay' is implicitly implying that the person who is, in fact, gay is also stupid or dumb. On a general scale, I've found that anyone who uses the words 'gay' or 'fag' are idiots, or at best intelligent bigots.

^I cannot express the boundless sorrow that I feel owing to the fact that none of these people will take that to heart. I've tried. I've reasoned, pleaded, argued, lost my temper, even broken a guy's nose once. I've lost faith. These people are lost causes. The best thing that can be done is to shun them utterly, to villify them as social outcasts, so that the tide can turn. Maybe in the future, the homophobic will go the way of the KKK member... we can only hope.

While we're making generalizations, I should point out that I've known quite a few gay guys, and bisexuals (male and female), and I have never once met one who was an asshole. Meanwhile, pretty much every homophobic I've ever met has been a rather reprehensible individual, whatever other, more admirable qualities he or she might have. Interesting observation, really. Although there must certainly be gay jackasses, I haven't met them.

KLD, if an openly gay man is dragged to death behind a pickup truck, is it his fault because he was openly gay? Or was it the fault of the bigot who killed him because of it? This quote reminded me of a court case some years back, whereby a judge dismissed charges against a rapist (who had confessed) owing to extenuating circumstances. Those circumstances were that the woman was wearing a short skirt at the time, and, according to the judge, 'she was asking for it'.
