I was looking for some honest feedback on our latest SIMPLE. edit if you guys are up for it? It's one of the first edit's I've actually gone in and color corrected and correctly saturated every shot individually, as well as the first time I've put effort into the titling and I was wondering how you guys thought it came out? What'd you like? What pissed you off? What is something I should work on for the future? https://www.newschoolers.com/watch/739055.0/SIMPLE---OPENING-WEEKEND?c=11&o=8&t=6
To me, overall a pretty good edit but seems a little long with that song choice. Also the extra black screen at the end should be cut. Loved the 3d tracking though! Are you using AE or boujou or what?
really liked the opening titles, nice work there. Also thought the colours were pretty nice to be honest, thought they worked pretty well with the vibe of the edit.
Standard glide cam framing issues on the letterbox crop, some were good, but a lot had tops of heads chopped off or feet chopped off which i thought was a shame. I also have to agree with it being a little long, because it was all rails, and there weren't that many different rails i thought it started to get a little repetitive.
That was sick dude! the only thing i would say is, again, it felt a little long. also, the titles at the start were sick, but the boxes over the heads i felt were a little wierd. what program do you use for the titles?
I felt the vibe of the edit and the song choice pretty much encouraged a longer edit, and IMO it worked out from being longer since I always find myself craving longer edits with that style. Everything else was pretty on point from what I could tell aside from what has already been mentioned.
Overall one of my favorite early season edits this year and find myself going back to watch it on a regular basis along with the YDKS Boreal opening day edit. 8.5/10 for me.

I too really like that edit at boreal. The filming and low angle shots and rap song made it appear a bit more unprofessional but it gave it a great vibe.
Here's my thoughts on your edit
This is very honest for me. I'm not trying to be a hater but I did not like it too much. I though the filming was good but it wasn't very creative. it was fine and acceptable but I didn't think it was very anything new or abstract. The edit was... too... mediocre. Nowadays every nser who films probably has either a t3i or 7d, a wide angle lens like an 11-16, and a glidecam. I mean it's a good setup I have that setup currently lol. but I can easily tell that this person follows the crowd. The song choice did not really bother me. I like the graphics and text a lot. It made the video more advanced and professional looking. What bothers me the most and sorry if this is harsh but I really don't like your 'simple' logo it seems a bit like a poser concept. Overall 9/10 grade because technically the color correction and editing and filming were nice proper and textbook. Good job for being brave and asking for honest opinion! +k to you for having sick skiers as well. I'm not trying to come off as a hater but this is what I thinking but don't let me influence you too much I probably don't know what I'm talking about anyway.

Thanks for the honest response marcus. Unfortunately I myself (Alex Zastre) didn't get to film the whole thing as we are a crew we tend to all film for these kinds of edits whilst my only solo jobs are videos for our local mountain. This is why some of the shots may have been deemed "boring" except quite honestly I used the shots that I thought were best filmed and even the ones I didn't film were basically shots I would have done the same way, so I can't really tell you anything besides sorry man. I enjoy our rokinon 14mm and flycam setup at the moment and I doubt it'll be changing as I believe this works best for us giving us a "professional" look for lines, but as you said that's just my opinion and to each their own. I'm glad you enjoyed the titling as I spent many MANY hours doing them as well as colour grading, which was especially hard cuz our white balance got fucked and made everything purple so colour grading was a bitch. Really glad to hear honest opinions man even if it wasn't all good, it was definitely constructive and will make me think twice before I setup a shot next time.
The video wasn't bad. Not sure what you did with the aspect ratio...did you add solid boxes at the top and bottom to fake a cinematic look, along with small ones on the side? If you removed those you'd prevent cutting off the skier's head and feet every now and then. Also, your logo is boring.

Well done though.
No.... it's been exported at 1280:544 aka 1:2.35 pixel aspect ratio AKA anamorphic widescreen. I didn't "fake" shit, it's the real deal homie, no solid box letterboxing or anything like that.
EvanSamson.I can't wait to see your movie. Is it just going to be urban or are you also gonna have park.
Gonna be sick either way
Good luck
our plan is to have a lil bit of both. But the park seggy won't just be another park seggy let's put it like that. I don't wanna give away the special sauce but it will be interesting for sure. Also we finna have a jump seggy too.
Thought I'd drop my 2 cents. My critiques sound extensive but I tend to point out way too many little irrelevant details:
- I don't like how you started the song, you should start it where it actually begins
- I don't really like your logo, I think you could change it up and make it look way better. There's a lot of unused empty space, the text doesn't seem to be centered within the circle, and the text seems to be at an awkward aspect ratio, like it's squished. It's generally not graphically appealing. I would suggest thinking about switching it up, here's a concept I thought of (The font is arbitrary, it's just to suggest an idea):
- On your overlay of the Simple logo, there is a very slight 1px border of dark pixels around the white portions
- IMO your graphic/titling just needs refinement. You have good ideas but I think the execution is mediocre:
+ Consider different font choices, your current ones seem very generic and default
+ Line spacing is off on the "Opening Weekend" title. A good rule of thumb is to separate lines between words by at least the spacing between individual letters
+ Cornered name titles are too large and too cornered - Consider making them a little smaller, more bold, and giving some more spacing between the edges of the frame.
+ I'm not a fan of the motion-tracked name titles or masked titles. They don't seem very "clean" like the rest of the video. Too much complexity and I'm just not stoked on the execution of it.
- The colors are somewhat inconsistent. Earlier shots have a lot of orangey tones, but shots around 2:00 have green and purple tones. It's really hard to get each shot to look consistent, which is why it's important to make sure that your colors (white balance, etc.) in camera while shooting are consistent so that you don't have to try to match differently-colored shots in post.
- Exposure/curves are a little inconsistent. The exposure was pretty spot on in camera, you don't have much underexposed and nothing is overexposed. But in post there is inconsistency with the blacks. A lot of your glidecam shots have crushed, deep blacks, but in the tripod shots, the shadows are much less deep and more flat. Try to even that out.
- If you're going to use the cinemascope ratio, use it to its full advantage. You can "cheat" the ratio by repositioning the original clip in post. For example, at 2:37, the skier's head pops out of the frame for a fair portion of the shot. If you had repositioned the shot lower in post, you could eliminate that.
- A little too much slow motion
- Too long. For edits like this - all from the same day/weekend, same features, etc - it gets very repetitive quickly, so try to trim it down to 2-3 minutes to retain the attention of your audience.
- For some reason your frame isn't fit to the screen. There shouldn't be borders on the left and right sides of the image
Overall I think all of your shortcomings are sourced from post production. Your filming is totally on par to improve a lot this season, I really respect that you shoot tripod so often. You just need to work on the editing + graphics aesthetics of video. 2 or 3 more videos worth of practice and you'll be making really quality stuff.
