seems this is the season where landing 10 feet to flat ice is catching up with my back. anyone else going into the fucked reality that your body can't take what it used to.

Yep, though I blame it more on my lack of exercise and strength training than simply getting old.
I had brutal back issues for a long time, and recently went to physio to help it and have had tremendous success with it.
My shoulder has been completely shot the last couple seasons. Cant even throw a ball without it dislocating. Been working out a lot in the off season trying to strengthen it. tweaked my knee as well last season but hitting the gym really seems to help. I guess at 27 I just don't bounce back up like i used to, it actually takes rehab to fix.
This is the first season where I'm starting to feel a little more fragile while skiing. I'm not old by any means, but I think I'm getting to point where I've been skiing just long enough to feel the effects. Here's to another season of sending it tho!

This was me a few years ago. I'm realizing that my early ambitions to get better are being replaced by just enjoying my time on skis and doing what feels good. I'll still try new stuff and I love to push my limits, but I'm just not doing that as aggressively as I used to. Now I'm just that guy cruising throwing 3s and back twos lol, no fux givin
iv been skiing about 17 years now and recently it was only my knees but now I'm defiantly hesitant to throw shit I'm almost sure i won't land. or shit to flat. maybe I'm just a pussy. but defiantly over the stage of trying the same trick over and over and falling.. maybe try it 2 twice and then give it a go the next day. I'm starting to feel more into just bombing around tranny finding and doing the fun easy shit. i do white water kayak in the summer allot and that builds the shit out of my upper body so I'm more in shape then i have ever been.
Age is just a number. Work on your body, yoga, pilates, core strength work and offcourse a shit load of leg work and you'll be fine.
However, that works in theory you have a job and can't spend two hours at the gym every day and the motivation might not always be there. Although on the other hand, calculated risk is key.
only 23 and I've already had 4 knee surgeries thanks to skiing, another one on my ankle, and I have to have weekly acupuncture and chiropractic appointments just to function. I'll need a full knee replacement by 30 and I've been on arthritis meds for about a year. I'm way too young to feel so fucking old

ive done 3 acl's and 3 meniscus scopes and knee's feel same as when they did when i was 17, just got to brace up, skateboard and stretch.
Respect times a million. I will find a way to make it up to the boat and make some turns with you.

Everybody used to tell me I was going to blow me knees out, but I have never had any knee problems. My back on the other hand has always been an issue. I think I have found something that really helps, but last week it went out again after being great for months. Not stoked about that. The muscles in my lower back spasm to the point where it's hard to breath. The funny thing is that I have never screwed up my back skiing; it's always been something weird: Holding my daughter's hand on the way to preschool and she decides to sit down while still holding my hand, tripped over a rolled up carpet. This last one I just reached across my body to grab something and I knew it immediately. Anyway, you just have to figure out what works for you and play through it. 48 now and looking forward to an awesome season, with a full bucket list of firsts to try.

Unfortunately I shattered my patella at 19 on the tramps at Windell's, and like literally shattered. I'll try to find the x-rays, I'm talking around 10-12 chunks but the doc said it was more powder than bone at that point. 5 pins, 9" of stainless steel wire, and 8 weeks later, it was time to for surgery 2 to take everything back out. There was so much scar tissue that the leg wouldn't bend past 90 degrees, so surgery number three was a mobilization of the knee to 140 degrees while under anesthesia. That one hurt. After over half a year of rehab I was back to skiing, mostly coaching instead of competing, but it was still probably too soon. Add another 3 years of abuse from skiing and fighting fires, and now theres hardly any cartilage left in my knee. My last surgery was the 21st of last month to do some general clean up and harvest cartilage to grow and put back in when surgery 5 comes around in another year or so.
Fortunately though I have a killer surgeon and awesome physical therapists who have been working with me to help prolong the knee replacement and get my strength and balance back.
The best part is that this most recent recovery has been going so well that I made it up for opening day today, caught first chair of skiers (3rd overall) skied pretty relaxed for most of the day but could still mess around in the early season park, and theres no sign of swelling at all!
Needless to say, I'm pretty fucking stoked right about now.
