i don't understand the point of riding a road bike on dirt just to jump over some planks

just ride a mountain bike.

I have a CX bike but don't actually race. It's just better than a road bike for hills and such and I'm used to the smaller frame. It's getting pretty beat though, I should probably either overhaul it or get a new setup.

I could see it being awesome, I took my singlespeed commuterish FGFS frame with 35C tires on some smoother XC trails and it's so much more fun than riding a mtn bike on the same terrain, you can haul so much ass and every feature and rock in the trail is so much more significant. It made trails I'd normally have no interest in riding just as fun as riding good DH trails. I could see racing being fun too, those guys haul ass. I definitely want to get a decent bike and try out racing next year
