Are grinding rails bad for your edges?

I always see in videos people digging there edges into rails is that how you are supposed to do it and i cant imagine that being good for the skis

IT's not the greatest but you can sharpen them with an angle grinder after. Go to harbor freight and you can pick one up for around 20 bucks. Also snag a wire brush for it if you want to do your bases.


But really it isn't THAT bad for em. Nothing where it's worth not hitting them. Skis do get messed up from hitting rails, you could brake stuff hitting jumps, running into trees. Just best to get a pair, not try to murder them but have fun.

IF you're that worried you can always try and snag a pair of used park skis. People that upgrade every year sometimes sell skis in great condition for dirt cheap.

I usually hit a rock with my gear first day so I stop treating it like new. It sounds retarded and probably is, but I would hate to not do something because I'm scared of it hurting my skis/board.

It's only good for your edges if you never want to have good edges again. There's only so much edge to work with when you go to tune them, and this just rounds them to a pulp making it almost impossible to ever have a nice, clean, sharp edge for carving a real turn.

But who cares? Who needs edges?

Rails and boxes are bad for your skis no matter how you ski them. That's why people who care about their skis don't ski park.

Statement #1 - you're crazy. I love you Mr.'bortionator but to suggest that hitting rails isn't bad for skis is misleading.

I used to be a pipe jock, and man once you hit ONE rail on a pair of skis they were never the same. Edging in the way that a traditional skier thinks about it is completely, irrevocably destroyed the second you decide to hit rails on that pair of sticks.

Having said that, what I think you're going for is the fact that hitting rails is one of the most awesome feelings in skiing you can get. Sticking a solid-ass rail is akin to a deep pow day. (maybe I'm crazy). I just fucking LOVE rails.

What you need to do is have a cheap pair (or old pair) that you decide are going to get fucked up on rails. Then, take a disc sander to the edges and round those fuckers out. That way, you have nothing to worry about in terms of catching with a sharp edge. You'll have to ski totally differently on them for sure... but man a nice pair of street/rail skis is the shit.

Basically everything you do is fine with totally railed-out skis. Slopestyle, street, jibs, pow, carving on soft snow... all good.

If you want to absolutely ruin a halfpipe, do an icy race course, or really fucking slay the shit out of some icy carves and you never want to touch a rail in your life.

But really... what kind of skier do you want to be?

no i is not good. At the park on my home mountain, they just put up a cement ledge for people to slide on and people do, except they get of and there skis are ruined

This thread can't be serious....park riding is horrible for your skis. Slamming your skis on metal rails and ice all day isn't good for any pair of skis park or not

If you get skis with extra beefy edges designed specifically for park you'll be fine...at least for a while. If you have 'standard' size edges they will get cracked/mangled fast.

As far as I know Chronics have a beefed up edge, so you should be good for a while. Boxes are obviously going to be easier on your edges than a kinked out rail feature - but I say don't let your skis dictate what you ride, just go for it.
