Hey everyone -

We've had a recent rash (again) of suspected downbombing on media items.

Downbombing is defined as upvoting your own piece of media that is in running for the homepage, and downvoting absolutely everything else regardless of its quality. Its very easy to see when you do this, as a healthy mixture of up/down/no votes is normal behaviour.

Previously the only way to check this was very manual, and as some of you know Mousseau was very on top of it.

Well I worked with the coding team for the last two days and we have now launched a tool that moderators are able to use to review all up/down votes by users. It is going to be extremely easy for our team to identify this type of behavior.

So just be wary. We take downbombing very seriously here, so if you're doing it for your own benefit you will be subject to a ban. Get caught twice and that will turn permanent.

Thanks everyone. Lets keep allowing the people to have a voice by proving we have the maturity to actually vote on things properly.

There should be a permanent thread to name and shame downbombing people. What's a ban going to do? Seriously? It might stop a few people but I think as a community if we actively discourage and shame those who do downbomb to create a tighter community.

Agreed with Chub, we should have like a sex offender kinda list, but make it the "vote offender" list or something. If you downbomb, you get put on the list.

We like to believe in a rehabilitation model.

I'm sure that everyone goes through the temptation of being a cheating fuckstick... but just because you had a bad set of judgement doesn't mean that you should be totally kicked out forever.

In Sklar's case, he was extremely remorseful about his manipulation of the system, he 'did his time' and we're happy to have him back as a productive member of the content community.

however, don't cheat, get caught and rely on redemption.... way better off to just be a good, contributing member in the first place!

Simply put, don't try and boost your own content by hating on other's. If you genuinely dislike something, by all means go for it, down vote that sucker. Act like a responsible member of the community and offer stoke/critique to others.

First downvote counts as 1/2 of second, which counts as 1/2 of third, etc. etc. Consecutive downvotes gain value until one holds as much weight as an upvote. The first votes' weights don't change.

Alternatively, the second votes increases the weight that it has, as well as the first. The third increases the weight of itself, and the previous two. Onward until their individual value is the same as an upvote.

We use a modified version of this algorithm for top rated -

Then, we use a heavily modified version of this algorithm for 'hot' on the homepage -

So already there is a lot of math behind the scenes that takes a lot of factors into consideration when looking at votes. The 'score' that you guys see is simply to give an idea of what has happened on a piece of media, nothing is actually calculated off of such a simple equation.
